is check engine light on? Can you keep the engine going using the gas pedal? Or does the engine run for a few seconds then die like its out of gas?

Ya sounds like fuel filter is clogged.Id start there. If not then fuel pump is going out.Has weak pressure and has enough to start it after turn key on but not enough to keep it running.Id start at the filter first since its a easy and inexpensive fix.

Your alternator might be shot and is no longer charging the battery or running the computers, etc.. If you can borrow a good battery, try it on your BMW. If the car runs better, then I'd say it's your alternator. Of course, you might need a new battery too.

Chevy lumina volts light

Sounds like your battery had gone bad and you were running on your alternator and may have burned it up as well especially if it was at night. The only way you can find out is if you have some one place a similar but good battery in your car start it up. While it is running have them disconnect the positive side of the battery. if the engine stalls out its your alternator and your battery. If it keeps running then it was just your battery. But more than likely its both. I have given you the back yard mechanic's way to test it. assuming you got it home and can't get it to a Technician like myself to hook up a multimeter to the battery, or the diodes in the alternator. or check the acid in he battery. you can also have a friend remove the alternator and take it to an Advanced Auto Parts Store and they can test both the battery and the alternator.

Alternator put in and the car won't start and dead new battery'

I am taking it you have a new battery. You put on a alternator. Now you need to charge the battery until it is fully charged. That way the car will run for a while before it stalls from undervoltage. With the battery charged check the voltage at the battery. It should be 12 to 13 volts. Now start the car and check the voltage it should be up to almost 14 volts. If that is good check with lights and heater blower on should be at least 13.5 volts. If the voltage does not increase you either have a bad alternator or it is not getting excited by the ignition switch on the vehicle. So you should find the wire that energizes the alternator and turn the key on it should have 12 volts on it. Hope all this helps. please rate my answer so I get points.

it sounds like you have blown fuse to the Alternator.. I don't know what car you are talking about but they charging systems vary.. But if alternator isn't getting all the power it needs it won't charge. this should be checked.

good luck

It sounds like you need a new starter. If you hear the starter click when you turn the key to start, replace your starter since you already replaced the battery. You might want to have your alternator checked out, or when you get your car started, test the battery terminals with a multimeter. You should have around 14 volts with the car running. If not, you will need a new alternator. The alternator won't keep the car from starting though, unless the battery was drained because it wasn't charged. Even then it is the battery keeping the car from starting.

If the starter is not clicking, check your fuses under the hood. If all checks out, you may have a bad ignition switch.

Battery keeps draining

if your battery died while driving and the car cut off while your driving,, your problem is from your alternator!!!,, on a normal working car, you can start, remove ther battery terminals and the car would still run cause the alternator will be powering the car. In your case the alternator isnt working and the car was working on battery power therefore when the battery went dead the car cut off.. Your alternator need \s to be charging between 13.5 and 14.2 volts.. as little as 10 volts will keep the vehicle running.. I'd suggest you have the alternator replaced.

Car won't stay running volts light is on bought a new battery thought that was the problem but my stereo shuts off and then if you don't hit the gas the car stalls then won't start with out a jump

You should have your alternator checked. If it is going bad, it won't produce the necessary power to keep your battery charged and run options like stereo, AC or heat. You might be lucky and a mechanic can fix it, but if you let it get burnt out it is going to cost considerably more!
Thanks for using FixYa! Happy Holidays!

IDLE problems when I turn on the AC. Electrical power seems to fluctuates when the car is stop sign/light or other when i have the AC on. Check it the other day, started it up, disconnected the battery,...

alternator needs good battery to keep SCR in the regulator on if it is loaded it will shut down. this will happen when you try rolling window down or rear defog will load up the system. When the truck is running and battery is hooked up the vehicle should run at @700 RPM at idle and when A/C compressor is commended on it should idle up to @1000 RPM and then back down to @700 RPM when compressor cycle off again. But if the system almost stalls then the battery and alternator should be changed together, A bad battery will damage a new alternator and a bad alternator will damage a new battery.

Car won't start even after new battery purchase

Alternator problem, the alternator charges the battery when car is running, so it has probably died now. Was working at reduced capacity for a while, which is why you were only getting a partial charge for some time. Now you have an open circuit completely as alternator has failed completely, time for a visit to an auto electrician. PS replacing acid in battery with distilled water is not a good idea. It probably was time for a new battery anyway.
