Question about Chevrolet Cavalier

I have a 2002 Cavalier, the tail light bulbs constantly quit working, the base of the bulb (3057) will burn out one of the four metal connectors. This is happening on the left and right side. Bulbs will only last hours. Thanks, Stuart

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Well as a first course of action make sure that it's a 12v double contact bulb. Please check if the sockets are corroded or kind of worn out which can cause grounding that's why the bulb blows. If it's corroded, try to clean it or use a smooth sandpaper to clear the corrosion.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FIxYa! Have a good one!

The passenger side rear brake light continues to burn out almost immediately. I changed out bulb (3057) and the brake light worked fine for a couple of times, then went out again. I changed out the...

Can't imagine how this is possible, since the entire car is the exact same 12 volts, and 12 volts is not supposed to be able to burn out any bulb made for 12 volts.
One possibility is that there is a corroded socket causing arcing or heating, that is accelerating wear.
Try switching the one from the other side, and putting the new one in the socket that does not burn out.
If it is still going bad, then you know you are putting in the correct bulb at least.
Arcing can cause a vibration of the filament, and premature failure.

Tail light burned out. How to get tail light cover off to replace it?

There are 2 screws holding the light assembly. You need a special star shaped screw driver to take them out. Then the assembly pulls out straight back. Next, the cover plate comes off exposing the bulbs. If I remember correctly, it is a 3057 bulb.

I have a 2002 JGC as well and its the driver side one with mine. I changed the bulb this last time and used bulb lube to cover all the metal. It worked for a mile then went out again but didnt burn out this time. I checked the contacts on the base and noticed there was some rust, scraped off with blade and used more bulb lube on those contacts too, working for now.

Rear tail lamps for the 2002 La Sabre has eight nuts that hold the cover in place ( one piece-all acroos the back of the car). Do not remove the nuts for the lock, the cover sits in place and is not secured to the lock. Use a 10 mm deep well socket. remove the nuts and lift the cover to replace the burned out bulb(s). The bulbs are #194 or #198 (very small bulbs), not the 3057. It is easy to locate the burned out bulbs by putting the car in reverse and shutting off the engine and then put the ignition key in the accessory mode. The lights will light unless they are burned out. Simply pull them out and replace with the new ones and put the cover back in place and secure the nuts.

Brake lights quit working

Tail lights acting insane?

We had the same issue with our 2000 Pontiac Montana. Brake lights, turn signal lights, running lights, back-up lights and emergency flasher didn’t work at all or operated at random. The cause: poorly designed aluminum contacts on the tail light circuit board and wiring harness connector arced over and disintegrated with normal use.

Pull the tail lamp assembly, remove the electrical connector and look for burned contacts on the connector plug and the connector socket (they call this long plastic piece with the socket the circuit board: it includes the four bulb sockets. Replace the circuit board and the wiring connector.

You can DIY this job with basic auto mechanical/electrical skills and tools. The two circuit boards and the two connectors set me back $230 (2009 cost) for new parts. The electrical contacts on the factory replacement parts are improved.

I needed a T-30 torx driver to remove the tail light assembly (you need this to change out bulbs, too), wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape and an electrical lug crimper to do the job.
