Question about 2001 Lexus RX 300

5 Answers

I have a Lexus RX300. Problem: Driver's side front window randomly sticks in the down position, and won't go back up for sometimes as long as 5-10 minutes or as quickly as 30-seconds. This is with using the auto down or up mode or just tapping lightly either way. Of course it won't do it when I take it to the dealer. So, they are wanting to throw parts at it to the tune of 700 bucks for the switch assy, and/or 450 for a new motor and regulator!!!!!! I wouldn't mind paying for one or the other since I'm planning on keeping the car several more years. But, I don't think I need both parts. Any more ideas or diagnostic troubleshooting that I could do to pinpoint the problem would be appreciated. I am mechanically inclined and can probably work on it with a little advice and tell me how to remove switch panel without tearing it up. Thanks

This is likely the switch assembly itself. The switch is an integrated and self contained unit. The motor and regulator assembly would fail or have more definative symptoms than what you are describing. Here are the instructions for removing the switch assembly. Let me know if you need anything else.

I've never been much of a "stat" kind of guy but I do have over 20 years doing this on high end vehicles. A switch is the most likely cause due to the info you have given me. If it was right in front of me, it would be very simple to prove. Window motors/regulators just don't act this way. I hope this gives you a good path to pursue. Nobody WANTS to spend money if they don't have to so... I would locate a trusted salvage yard and get the part that way, whether it means to ship or you go get it, it will save you money.

I would suspect the switch is the problem, the drivers side window switch is the most used and fails first no matter the make of car, it is a common problem. My suggestion is to have the dealer replace driver side master switch plate first and then see if it fixes the problem, I will bet it will. I have done a search of the problem at Lexus owners sites and this switch is a common problem. As far as pinpointing the problem goes you will need a factory scanner to watch the signal from the switch going into the Body Control Module. The dealer has not conformed this problem and that is why they want to cover all the bases and replace the motor and the switch. The switch is very easy to replace and doesn't require the door panel be removed. To remove the old master switch plate do this, insert a small flat blade screwdriver under the rear of the switch panel and pull up, it might be kind of hard to get out so pull hard! a tip for not scratching the panel would be to put electrical tape on the end of the screwdriver that your using

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the problem will be just on the window motor. If it's worn out issues like this occurs. No need to replace the switch and regulator for the motor is the only one at stress.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Two things could be going on here and i say this with serious content-replacing parts will not work for me. Finding out WHY is better. The first is the switch it self could cause the the delay. check with volt and ohm meter the up and down at button to see if 12 volts is going both ways with out interruption. if a 0 volt is seen while button is in the up or down position then the switch is at fault . If 12 volts is shown as soon as you touch the up or down switch then go to motor. Check connections at motor pull it and see if there is corrosion if so clean and add Dielectric silicon to preserve and weather proof connection. Now as we did for switch hook up meter to power wire with connector (connected-Back probe power wire) ( See Diagram) and see if you have interrupted power there--is motor engaging at the time button is pushed? If you have 12 volts and If motor is taking it's time, then motor is bad.
Motor can be replaced without having to buy the regulator.
Now again i am not there to test this for you. there is some other points to be known. for me to help you.
Has the battery ever been disconnected before the window problem? if so , Try this step--
    2005 LEXUS RX330 REPAIR MANUAL*:
"... RESET (INITIALIZE) POWER WINDOW REGULATOR MOTOR
    NOTICE:
    - Resetting the power window motor (initializing the pulse sensor) is necessary when the battery
terminal is disconnected; when the power window regulator master switch, power window regulator switch, wire harness, power window regulator and power window motor are replaced or removed/installed; or when the PWR fuse, RR DOOR LH fuse, RR DOOR RH and ECU-B fuse are replaced. AUTO operation function, jam protection function and remote operation function via the power window regulator master switch do not operate without resetting.
    - Be sure to reset the power window regulator motors using the power window switch on each door because the motors cannot be reset by remote operation using the power window master switch.
    - In order to prevent a large amount of current from flowing in the wires, do not simultaneously reset 2 or more power window regulator motors.
    - If the power window switch has been continuously operated for a long time, the power window regulator motor can stop so that no additional load will be applied to the motor. Continuing to operate the switch even after the motor has stopped will cause the switch to blink while restricting the AUTO UP/DOWN function and the remote UP/DOWN function. If this happens, reset the motor again after several minutes have passed.
    - Whenever disconnecting the battery terminal, reset all the other systems besides the power window control system.
    (a) Turn the ignition switch ON.
    (b) Halfway open the power window by pressing the power window switch.
    (c) Fully pull up the switch until the power window is fully closed and continue to hold the switch for approx. 1 second after the power window is fully closed.
    (d) Check that the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally.
If the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally, reset operations have been completed at this time. If not normal, follow steps (e) to (g) below.
    (e) Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10 seconds.
    (f) Connect the battery terminal.
    (g) Perform the above steps (a) to (d) again. If the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally, reset operations have been completed at this time. If not normal, follow steps (h) to (k) below.
    (h) Turn the ignition switch ON.
    (i) Halfway open the power window by pressing the power window switch.
    (j) Fully pull up the switch until the power window is fully closed and continue to hold the switch for approx. 12 seconds after the power window is fully closed.
    (k) Check that the AUTO UP/DOWN function operates normally..."

USUALLY POWER WINDOW PROBLEMS ARE ONE OF THREE THINGS. 1. SWITCH 2. MOTOR 3. WINDOW REGULATOR. THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM THE LEXUS HAS IS THE MASTER SWITCH IN THE DRIVERS DOOR. IT CAN ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE PASSENGER DOOR SWITCH....IF WINDOW REGULATOR IS BAD YOU WILL HEAR SOME CRAZY NOISES COMING OUT OF DOOR PANEL...VERY OBVIOUS.... FOLLOW THIS CLOSELY...STARE AT A LITE DOME LIGHT USUALLY WITH DOOR OPEN...WHEN YOU PRESS WINDOW SWITCH, IF THERE IS ANY DIMING OF DOME LIGHT....MOTOR IS BAD. IF DOME LIGHT STAYS THE SAME BRIGHTNESS... SWITCH IS BAD... EXCEPT IN THE CASE SOME HACKER HAS BEEN IN THE DOOR PANEL BEFORE ...IT DOES TAKE A SPECIAL TALENT TO REMOVE DOOR PANELS WITHOUT BREAKING THINGS AND EVEN MORE TALENT TO REPLACE WINDOW REGULATORS
