What kind of fluid do I put into the transmission of a 1988 GMC S-15. I know the transfer case takes transmission fluid, but does the transmission take 80/90W or transmission fluid?

If the vehicle has an Automatic Transmission: Dextron II

If the vehicle has a Manual Trans, its complicated.
Depending on Trans model:
The 77mm 5-speed and 89mm 4-speed overdrive use Dextron II ATF.
The 117mm 4-speed uses API GL5 SAE 80W90 gear lubricant.
GM recommends Synchromesh Trans Fluid (1052931) in both the 85mm 4-speed and 5-speed.
Hope this helps!

I did some investigation and couldn't find what type of fluid for MT, I know there is a drain plug on the lower trans. I would remove it a check the fluid, 90 W has a distict smell, and of coarse auto. trans. fluid is red, and I have heard of motor oil also (smell), I have removed 90W from stand. tran. and added auto trans. fluid, but that was because of cold weather conditions.

Any high quality brand name trans fluid is fine. I have a preference for Quacker State.

2002 envoy trans problem--second 1 thats burned out the trans and transfere case has th same fluid in it

The two units do not share or mix fluids. The transmission needs automatic transmission fluid and the transfer case uses ONLY Auto-Trak II fluid (only available at GM dealer). Do not put any other fluid in either.

My 1988 surburban will not shift into overdrive any suggestions

It's probably a valve body problem, shift solenoid, stuck valve or something of that nature. Is the fluid fairly clean and is it full? To check the fluid level the engine must be idling and the transmission must be in park. The fluid should be Red, not brown or black. Those vehicles have a nasty habit of the seal going bad between the transmission and transfer case (4X4 only) and it will dump about 2 quarts of transmission fluid into the tranfer case. This leaves the trany dangerously low on fluid but, you never know it because there is no fluid leaking on the ground. Check the transfer case oil, is it way over full, if so that seal is bad.

Transmission fluid leaking back, 1988 Ford Bronco

your output seal on the tranny or input seal on your transfer case is bad. you have to pull your transfer case to tell. this is a pretty straight forward job. block wheels. put transfer case in neutral. drop front and rear drive lines.diconnect transfer case shift linkage. there is a short commponent connecting the trans to the transfer case. the bolt on either end face each other. remove the bolts to the transmission. the transfer case is heavier than it looks, i suggest getting help. pull back on the transfer case until it will drop down. it will pull out a bit because of the trans output shaft. replace what will probibly turn out to be the tranny output shaft seal and reassemble in reverse order.

Fluid type in 1985 gmc sierra k2500 4x4 aluminum transfer case

You can use the same ATF as the transmission or a synthetic ATF for GM Transmission. Most guys will use normal ATF and mix Lucas ATF transmission additive to it, to make the fluid last longer. Good luck and hope this helps. There was two types of transfer case available to your truck. NP205 takes 5.1 pints NP208 takes 10.0 pints

Transfer case fluid for 99 suburban

If it has auto 4x4. which will have 4 push buttons on the dash it will take auto trac fluid that you will need to get at your local GM dealer. A regular transfer case will take Automatic transmission fluid.
