Question about 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Open Question

RPM revs really high when my vehicle is in park and often during normal driving. Usually after the rpm jumps from let say 1 to 4 or 5 it stays like that for 5 min. before cumming, back down often resulting in the engine shutting down for 5 min. after wards. If the car is in drive when this happens it just accelerates on its own without me having to put my foot on the gas. What is going on. is this the same problem the the Toyota's were having? Is there a recall on the 1999-2000 Sonata's. Is this a quick or inexpensive fix, or is this a major fix? Please somebody help. Am I the only one with this issue?

Hi Tyler, difficult to say without more details, but it sounds to me like the sensor monitoring the RPM for the engine management unit is faulty and the engine management cannot compensate. Bad connections will give more problems during cold times because metal shrink and connectors might loose contact. Best would be to get it checked out by someone that knows for your safety, this sounds very unpredictable and dangerous. Hope this helps.

I would consider changing the vehicle speed sensor. When they go bad, they can really throw out a lot of bad data to the computer, resulting in unexpected behavior like you're experiencing. They're only around $20-$25. I hope this helps! :)

Have 1999 cavilleir does it have a rpm protecter

Yes, the PCM for your vehicle's engine has a rev/speed limit seeting programmed into it. Most stock, non high performance/police package vehicles usually won't go above a top speed of 97MPH. if you were to rev your engine while it was in park or neutral, once the engine reaches the cut out rpm limit preset in the PCM, it will cause the engine to cut back, then it will rev up until it hits the preset limit, then cut back, and it keep repeating that pattern. It may sound as though you have a high rev ignition failure that sounds like waaa, waaa, waaa, waaa, but that indicates the PCM is doing its job.

.the control sensor throttle ,look on the opposite side to the cable and a little box thingy with a wiring connection ,unless its a later vehicle then this will use a fly by wire. But i do fell this type of fault is beyond the average weekend mechanic and i would advise you to visit a dealer
