Hi, yes, this is a pretty big job but not really hard. You have to jack up the car and go in through the wheel well to get the alternator out. Fortunately, there are good instructions at autozone.com, which I have pasted below. Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for using FixYa.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION See Figures 2 through 11

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the right front wheel from the vehicle.
  5. Remove the right wheel inner fender splash shield.
  6. If equipped, remove the alternator dust shield attaching bolt and unclip the shield from the alternator. When removing the dust shield, be careful not to damage the rubber boot over the battery's positive terminal.
  7. Disengage the alternator field wire connector.
  8. Remove the retaining nut and wire from the positive (B+) terminal on the back of the alternator, using alternator output stud wrench SA9401C or equivalent, as a back-up wrench to prevent the stud from rotating. If the positive terminal stud rotates, the plastic insulator will crack or break, causing alternator failure.
  9. Remove the upper and lower alternator attaching bolts.
  10. Remove the alternator from the vehicle through the wheel well opening.

To install:
  1. Position the alternator in the vehicle and install the lower attaching bolt.
  2. Install the upper attaching bolt and tighten both bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  3. Engage the alternator field wire connector.
  4. Install the B+ terminal wire. The battery terminal wire should be placed on the back of the alternator between a 10 and 11 o'clock position.
  5. Be sure to use the alternator output stud wrench SA9401C to prevent the terminal stud from rotating, then tighten the alternator positive terminal nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6. Install the alternator dust shield and tighten the fastener bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  7. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  8. Install the wheel well splash shield and right front wheel. Tighten the wheel lugs in a criss-cross pattern to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  9. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

Put in new battery and the battery warning light is still on. Is this an alternator problem and if so is this something i can replace myself

Hi, if the have replaced the battery and the light is still coming on, the battery doesn't go on only when the battery is low. The battery light will go on if the alternator is not charging the battery.
You definitely have a problem with the alternator..

Alternator needs replaced is this possible to do my self, if so how do i find instruction

This is a set of general instructions. Steps may vary depending on the specific vehicle you are working on.

1. Place fender covers over the fenders

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable

3. Disconnect and label the wiring harness connections to the alternator (Painters Masking tape works very well for labeling automotive wiring).

If you vehicle is equipped with the belt tensioner:

4. Insert a 3/8th " ratchet wrench or a serpentine belt tool in the square located on the tensioner

5. Put pressure on the tensioner toward the center of the engine and move the belt off the Alternator pulley.

6. Loosen the alternator Pivot bolt and the bolt that attaches the alternator to the adjustment arm

If you vehicle does not have a belt tensioner:

4. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt.

5. Remove the bolt that attaches the alternator to the adjustment arm.

6. Rotate the alternator to loosen the drive belt and disengage the belt from the pulley. Be careful that any spacers that are used in mounting are kept with their original bolts. This will make correct reinstallation much easier.

7. While supporting the alternator remove the pivot bolt.

8. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

Fan/ alt. belt broken. Difficulty of replacement?

I'm assuming you have the 4cyl ... 22RE. On my truck the biggest problem was loosening the bolt that the alternator pivots on ... difficult to get at. I found one of the small palm type ratchets helpful. As I recall this belt is the innermost so you will have to remove the A/C and power steering belts to replace it. It's probably time to replace them all if one broke any way. The outer two have tensioners and so they're easy to adjust/remove ... the alternator you need to pry on it some to get the tension and then tighten the bolt that holds it in place ... and then tighten the previously mentioned pivot bolt. By the time you remove the splash pan to access the bottom etc you'll put a fair amount of time into the project but it's not difficult. And you'll know how to re-tension the belts when the time comes.

How do i replace the alternator belt

Without knowing what year and model vehicle your asking about it would be difficult to tell you exactly how to replace the belt. But since it is a 84 it's probably pretty simple. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and the adjuster bolt.. Using a prybar move the alternator and remove the belt. Replacement is the reverse of removal.

Alternator drive belt squealing

yeh, mine did the same thing with a hydralic belt. it was the bearings. mazda capellas use a lot of 6202 bearings which, luckily, are fairly cheap, and are commonly used in pool pumps. so you can find them at pool pump repair stores. although pool pumps use 6202 2RSR bearings. these are just the water proof type, but are excactly the same size and can be used.
to test if it is a bearing problem, remove the belt and try to twist the individual wheels by hand, you should be able to turn the 2 smaller ones.
from memory the alternator belt is in a fairly in accessable postition so the belt is going to be hard to put back on.try other things first, like wiping the inner side of the belt with a dry cloth to remove moisture.
worst case senario is your alternator has, or is starting to, seize up and you need to replace it.

Broken alternator belt

just google for "bimmer forums" or similar items. There are a bunch out there and very helpful. I do know those engines do have a certain technique to replacing them, but most BMW's are fairly simple. (I am not sure of the exact proceedures for a z3) They are just very different from US cars.
