Firts disconnect battery. Remoce air filter box. You will see the starter right under neith the air box. You will see a rubber bute. Under the boot is a 12mm wrench size nut. Remove nut. There is a single wire connector. Unplug connector. There are 2 bolts holding the starter to the trans. One of them is pretty big.(19mm socket size ?) and the other is smaller. Remove them both and the starter will come out. Reverse install procedure. Good luck

The other guys pointed you in the right direction. Just take the battery out (remove + first, make sure it doesn't touch any metal - put ziploc bag around it). Find the bolts that hold the big black box that holds your air cleaner and loosen the hose clamp. Then you can see the starter.

It looks tough, I paid a mechanic $350 to do it the first time, but he left the wire next to the transmission and it melted and wires touched. I did it myself for $180 and it took less time than driving the car to the mechanic!

The guy that suggested removing the air cleaner box is right. I had my starter replaced yesterday (02/10). It aint hard. I should have done it myself.
Disconnect the negative battery wire. Remove the air ceaner box and your starter will be staring you right in the face. Easy.

How many labor hours should a shop charge to replace a Starter on a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE?

A reputable shop should not charge any more than an hour and a half labor, and that should include the diagnostic also.

the dash voltage egulator probably went bad. First, check the battery & make sure you have 12 volts, not running. Check it again running & you should see about 14.5 volts. If that's good,I'd replace the guage assembly.

How do I change the starter in a 2000 Nissan?

you will have to remove the battery, the air intake assembly and air filter housing for access to the starter which goes into the flywheel on the transmission to the right of the motor when looking under hood from front of car. you will probably need a variety of extensions and a universal joint for your sockets will help reaching the mounting bolts easier.
