It's easier to remove the speedo part of the dash, screws on top of cluster and around steering column, I can't remember where all the srews are, as you pull it out, reach behind it and unclip the cable, there should be an electrical connector also, now you can reach the cable. I can't remember if the steering column need to drop down, I guess you will find out.
Sorry it's been awhile since I worked on that old of car, but I had a 73 - 442 good luck

How to install a speedometer cable on a 1956 bel air

The cable housing screws off of the transmission tailpiece and the speedometer head at the back of the instrument cluster. Once you have both end loose pull the old cable from the end you removed from speedometer cluster. be sure not to leave part of the old cable in the transmission. Cable should be squared off on both ends. Screw the housing onto the transmission finger tight. Rub lithium grease on the entire length of cable being careful not to get too much on it. Feed the new cable into the housing from the instrument cluster end, twisting the cable so the squared end will slip into the speedometer gear at the trans. once it slips into place you will not be able to twist it. Then insert the cable into the speedo housing at back of instrument cluster, finger tightening the nut onto the threads. That should do it. Additionally, you may want to inspect the cable housing for wear or kinks and replace if needed. Hope I've helped.

Speedometer not working

The speedometer is electronic. There is no speedo cable. It could either be the speedometer sensor located in the transmission, or the instrument cluster. Is your speedometer a gauge, or an LED display? The gauge can be replaced, but the entire dash cluster will have to be checked if it is an LED display.

Speedometer Cable replacement

A universal kit will work for your application. Most of the time the center cable is what is damaged.

1. Remove speedometer cable from transmission
2. Remove speedo gear retainer and remove speedo gear.
3. Pull out cable from sheath - If broken you will only get part of it
4. Remove instrument panel and pull out section of cable still trapped in cable sheath if applicable.

For re install follow directions on package.

1. Cable appears un-damaged: Check to make sure the speedo gear is not damaged where the cable enters it. Then also check the back of the speedo head cable hole for damage.
2. You can measure you two broken pieces to arrive at an appropriate length for ordering purposes.
3. Make sure this is well lubricated on install otherwise the speedo can jump up and down or damage the new cable.

My speedometer has stopped working, what can i do?

This solution might be a little dated, but if your speedometer cable has broken, that would acuse the speedo to stop working. The fix used to be, to unscrew the speedo cable from the transmision. It is pretty easy to spot, it is an odd looking flexible cable. Then get behind the dash, and unscrew it there, then go by a new speedo cable and replace it. This might not work with some of the newer digital read outs though.

Leaking transition fluid from under dash on to break peddles. i think from the speedometer cable

they adapter that the speedo cable attaches to on the transmission is defective, this allows fluid to go up the turning cabe and get on the floor, replace the speedometer cable adapter at the trans.

Speedometer doesn't work in my 98 Mits Galant and only warm air.

Well the speedo problem could well be behind the actual speedo gauge. Theres a long square shapped plastic piece on the end of the cable the fits in to the back of the gauge, as it turns it makes the hand on the dial read the speed, In most cases the plastic bit breaks away from the cable which will make the speedo read zero. You will have to get another speedo cable and replace it the same route as your original one.You have to take off the dash surround to get the gauge cluster out for a start to see if its broken at that end.

rpm is a sensor on your engine.  Speedo comes off the tranny or transfer case.  Some speedos are digital and some are cables.  The digital ones- take out the old sensor and spice on a new one and screw it back it.  Here is the matching part
