Question about 1992 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

Hi and thank you. Ok I have a 1992 Subaru with 230,000 mi. It back fires at times and has no acculturation when I put my foot on the gas. I have to pump the gas a bit then it will go. Now I replaced the fuel pump. And the weird thing is that it will after while of driving it, it runs better. However the check engine light is now on. I had it just fully serviced for oil etc. I am (with no auto skill) trying to save money by fixing this myself. Oh yes it does seem to burn oil.

The problem is probably the Oxygen sensor and you will need to go to garage to fix this . Requires special tools.

I have a 1992 dodge dakota, it runs really rough, stalls at start up, have to keep your foot on gas, when at a stop it stall, when driving at cost it will buck and back fire through carb, (not all the time...

You need a valve job and probably the bottom end done also. it runs crappy at first because the cylinders are full of oil from the valve seats leaking after a while you have burned this oil and it runs better, Don't waste you money on an ECM. Broken valve springs , leaky valve seats, if you know all this you should know you need to rebuild your engine and stop wasting you money, by hoping it's something else. I'd sell it and just by another low end driver, because it isn't worth the repairs.
good luck

Car violently bucks and jerks when I take my foot of gas pedal to slow down and then apply subtle pressure to accelerate again. Impossible to drive in stop-&-go traffic. 1992 Legacy, manual. Has new...

This is timing slop, when you take your foot off the gas pedal, the timing chain or ignition has no more load and gets loose and the timing changes.

My Subaru legacy grandwagon has started cutting out at idle speed (intermittently) & also sometimes if you go on a short errand then it wont start when you get back in the car. Engine turns over...

You could have a number of problems. First do a complete tune up, proper timing, new plugs etc.

Turn the key and do not give it gas. If it starts slowly give it gas and let me know what it does. I suspect it will cut out. In that case, you might have bad injectors. Let me know if I can be of further help

Changed engine but a non start

Valve Timing sounds off to me (belt driven to valves) You are assuming the timing marks on the heads AND your engine drive pulley are OK, right? Heads could be 180deg out which is easy to fix by taking off the belt at the heads and manually rotating the pulley once and retesting.

Pull a plugwire, shove a rope of twisted tinfoil into it and see if it sparks to block. If you get fire, then my very strong guess is that the spark and Gas/Air compression cycle aren't happening at the same time and the valves are 180deg out.

1992 subaru

If you don't have a distributor for the ignition then the ECM, computer, controls the timing. To adjust the timing you have to have an OBD tool to plug into the cars diagnostic plug to m ake adjustments. If it's running a little rough go ahead and run a couple of tanks of gas through you car before worrying about the timing. Use a fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank like Lucas brand. Some Autozones will plug their units in and read codes for you if your concered about other problems. Good luck.
