This is caused by the ignition timing being disrupted. There's possibly something going wrong with the distributor, maybe the coil, ignition module, bad spark plug wires, there's a sequence of parts in the system that would cause misfiring if one of them has failed.
My brothers old Chevy 6 cylinder started doing that and it turned out to be that the timing chain tensioner had failed. That made the timing chain sloppy so when he let off the gas, it caused the whole thing to skip a beat, sputter, backfire and then catch back up with itself when he put his foot back on the pedal.

You may have a bad egr valve.thats usually causes this. you can spend a fortune replacing sensors,i can offer an alternative if you're near an autozone or advance auto. they can code read it and the codereader will spit out the code thats the issue. free! they can code read anything up to 1999 but i'm saying most very likely a bad egr valve hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

94 GMC Suburban. Replaced intake manifold, now runs poorly.

You may not have sealed the manifold correctly, mistakes like using the rear and front rubber seals can cause this instead of a bead of silicone. To check for intake leaks spray carb spray along the intake gasket to see if the engine changes tone or idle speeds, if it does you have a leak,.

Vehicle idle's fine but when you step on the gas it spits and sputters and backfires it is not out of time, new timing chain.

Sounds like it might be caused by low fuel pressure to the injectors. Maybe the fuel filter needs to be replaced. If that doesn't help, then it might also be the electric fuel pump in the gas tank.

I have a 99 gmc sonoma 2.2L running bad spits and sputters and dies alot these 2 codes pop up p0171 and 02htr what are they thanks

P0171 is a lean Oxygen Sensor code. It is trying to tell you that your engine is running lean...not getting enough fuel, or getting too much air. That will cause the poor running and dying. This is most likely caused by a bad vacuum leak. The O2 heater code is probably caused by a failed O2 sensor heater. Sometimes it is caused by an open or short in the O2 sensor circuits, but most of the time it is the sensor itself.

Replaced fuel filter & fuel pump and screen.

not positive but in the air breather there is a mass air flow sensor and sometimes air filter particles gets stuck on the sensor. It will look like a white piece of lint,if there is be careful to remove it and try it.Usually a backfire and sputtering is the signs
