Question about 1985 Chevrolet Chevy

1 Answer

I have a 1985 K5 Blazer, I think the fuel pump went out yesterday, I put gas in it Wend. night and when I got home I could smell gas pretty bad. When I went to start it yesterday it just cranked but wouldn't turn over. Is there someway or something else to try to figure out if it's actually the fuel pump or if it's just a blown fuse?

I think you need to get to a mechanic. If you smell gas, then your fuel pump is pumping it out, gas is not getting burned properly and it is being dumped either via a leak or incomplete combustion. You have some type of problem with your intake or combustion system which needs attention.

My 1988 k5 blazer has not been cranked in 2 years I'm trying to get it cranked t only crank with starting fluid fuel pump has a spot in back cut out when ignition is on I can't hear it what's wrong

if starting on fluid and no hum from pump usually points to bad fuel pump ---check fuses ,relays ,wires and connections sitting that long can let rust debris, critters cause problems with equipment---also check fuel filter possible clogged /lacquered up by old gas

Gas Guage bouncing strong gas smell before 1998 Chevy Blazer wouldn't start at all. Engine still turns over

Check your fuel pressure, if low or no pressure, replace fuel filter first. My guess is the fuel pump and sensor are bad. You may also want to see if your getting spark, but I don't think bad plugs would make has gage jump around, but if they are not sparking correctly they will allow gas to flood the motor and that's when you get the gas smell

Yes there are two fuel pumps of there are two fuel tanks.
One in each tank.
I assume you tried both tanks?
Best way to diagnose, put fuel in both tanks, and check each one.
The fuel pump relay in under the hood on the relay bank driver side fender.
You can provide power there on the lug going to the fuel pump. So, make sure the tank selector is working properly by setting the selector on the left tank, then turning the key to on, you should hear the pump come on for a couple seconds. Then do the same for the right tank. You need to make sure that the same pump is not coming on. Listen to each side. If that works, then the relay is OK too, and you have ruled out the pumps. Then check the valve that switches the tanks, see if there is any debris in it, or if it is even switching tanks.

Also check your fuel pressure at the fuel injector rail.

Fuel pump problem...?

A cheaper fix might be as simple as the fuel filter, give that a go first, good luck

Check the ignition switch located under the dash on the steering column. Check to see if you hear an electric switch go on when you first turn the key on.

use a scanner sound like a bad sensor .mass air flow - map sensor - coolant sensor. check vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator if wet with gas replace fuel pressure regulator. make sure yours spark pluge the right heat range. also change air filter. check charcoal canister. check oxygen sensor and egr valve. make sure its not stuck open.
