Question about 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Is there a specific type of engine coolant for my 2005 grand prix? My mechanic says my coolant needs to be flushed and replaced with the proper type of coolant. There is no rust in my coolant.

Hello restrada.

Your Pontiac original specification calls for Dexcool coolant.
This is an orange colored fluid.
If the green regular type has been added the system should be flushed and refilled with Dexcool.

Thank you for using FixYa.

05 grand prix........if it need new heating core, what will bleeding the radiator do...

Bleeding air out of the system will purge also air out of heater core. Sometimes you may need to add a "flushing tee" (available from an autoparts store) to get some trapped air out of system.

If the air is not removed, if an air pocket is in the heater, you get no heat because coolant cannot move through at an adequate rate to be useful. In other areas it can cause hot spots in the engie that lead to cracked heads, blown head gaskets, or an engine that does not run well.

Go somewhere and get codes retrieved and see what they are you could have bumped a connector or broke a sensor while doing repairs. Also double check did you disconnect any connectors?

Steve, if you have have bubbling going on in the tank. More than likely you have got the engine to hot and smoked a head gasket or head. Its allowing compression from the motor to enter the coolant system.

When i start my 2005 grand prix i can hear water and i know my ac is not draining but the drain plug is clean on the firewall, as well my engine time runs a little high, cleaned rad and got it flushed and...

Sounds like you have air in the system. Look for an air bleeder near the thermostat on the black steel coolant hose. It will take some experimenting and patience to get the air out but it will happen.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. the other day my check engine light came on. I took it to O REILEYS this afternoon and hooked up the computer to the car and what came up was something like COOLANT...

IF CAR TEMP GAUGE IS GOING ABOVE 200 DEGREES, CHANGE THEMOSTAT IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOU DO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. IF THE TEMP STAYS AT 195 DEGREES, THE THERMOSTAT IS STUCK OPEN AND THE ENGINE WILL TAKE LONGER TO WARM UP. IT IS AN EASY FIX IF YOU ARE MECHANICALLY INCLINED. BUY NEW THEMOSTAT- ABOUT 10 -15 DOLLARS - AND CHANGE. HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 04 GRAND PRIX.

WHAT TPE OF COOLENT DO I USE IN MY 2004 GRAND PRIX GT

DexCool. However, if you completely flush the entire coolant system clean, you can use whatever you want. GM recommends, and will only warranty the engine, DexCool as the coolant.

DexCool is only a few bucks more per gallon, and your car only hold about 2 gallons total. I just flushed my car and used Havoline brand DexCool. Just make sure whatever brand you buy, it say DexCool on it. And make sure that you either premix it to be 50/50 coolant/water, or buy the premixed stuff. Like I said, you'll need about 2 gallons of mixed 50/50 if you flushed the engine out.

How much does it cost to fix a water pump in a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix.

The price of the water pump depends on which engine you have in your car. There are three different size engines for a 2005 grand prix. If your not going to do the work yourself, I cant give you an acurate quote as all mechanics charge differently. You'll just have to go to differend mechanics and get some quotes.
