You can't without problems, it's a saftey factor incorporated in the car, I don't know why you would want to disconnect them.

I don't understand what lights running in daylight or constantly is a safety factor. Not all 99 Jeeps came like That. Just ones made in Canada. I would just simply prefer tohave them running

  • la3peatkb8 Dec 30, 2010

Prefer to not have running. I have the auto switch I can use rather then having them on constantly.

The saftey issue is So that others can see you, people forget to turn there lights on when there is fog, dusk, raining, yes you are suppose to turn you lights on when there is bad weather, just like a motorcycle, and if you have a switch to turn them off and on then what is the problem, you ansewered your own question, TURN THE SWITCH OFF

  • la3peatkb8 Dec 30, 2010

Ummm, an auto switch adjust to the lights around, so when darker they automatically come on, when its daylight they don't. Daylight running lights are an entirely different deal. No switch for that.

No, the switch your discribing is the interior light, dash light dimmer, As of 1997 manufactures were trying to go safety related, there is no harm in the lights being on, unless they don't turn off, (they do have a delay when you park,) but will go off.
Just like your turn signals, IF, it flashes faster than normal, you have a light out in front or back, you can't change that, and you can't change the running lights working WITHOUT creating a problem

  • la3peatkb8 Dec 30, 2010

Can you clarify why it would cause problems. Cause they didn't come factory like that on all Jeeps. Just Canada ones. So if its safe for some wouldn't it be alright for the Canada ones too. Only way the running lights turn off while running is if emergency brake is pulled up. I found this out with my owners Manuel. I appreciate your time on this topic.

You might want to read back on your post, " I have the auto switch I can use rather then having them on constantly "

  • la3peatkb8 Dec 30, 2010

Ya, thats why I don't need them on constantly. I have the auto switch. But apparently the day running lights over ride that. Only way they go off is with parking break. I mean really who needs their lights to run during day. I understand the motorcycles do that, but I don't see it as a need in a suv.

I am not the manufacture so I can't ansewer that question, people add options to cars when they buy them NEW, When you start messing with things that are not broke, you create your own problems(Electrical problems, which jeep has a problem with already), I don't know about the E-brake that's a totally different system than the headlights, so I tend to no believe this, but you still ansewered your own question to turn the lights off, I have been a mechanic for over 40 years and have never understood why people that don't understand cars want to try diagnosing them, If you are that adimit about this problem then go to you local library and ask for the wiring diagram for this car, you will then see what I am talking about.
Any mechanic would tell you this is a waste of my time to search for this problem, the headlights work, (after all, you can see if the headlights work during the day, so that your not driving at night with one headlight) or you can take it to a dealer and pay $100 an hour to have them look at it

  • la3peatkb8 Dec 30, 2010

Well its in the owners Manuel about the emergency break turning them off while running. I find this odd too but its in black an white in the book. So I'm guessing its true. And I went an checked and it is. Well thanks anyways.

Found out the correct an simple way to fix the issue. Go to a dealership an they use a DBRIII tool to simply change the country code from Canada to united states. No messing with wires or making things worse. The DRL relay switch does not even need to be taken out. Its a common occurrence with Canadian made cars brought to US.

Rear light and brakelight don't work when headlights are turned on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My first guess would be a ground problem.
The headlights and tail lights are controlled by the same headlight switch, but the brake lights are on a totally different circuit.
You may have to get a shop manual to get the wiring diagrams needed to troubleshoot the circuits if the ground connections are ok.
The lights involve the body computer and other components.

I would try your pickup coil in your distributor. I would also be checking the o2 sensors. both of these things can cause problems like this and would not set off the check engine light.

Sounds like an electrical problem; look for loose, corroded or kinked/broken wires. The problem is most likely in the dash wiring/connections and seems to be pretty common in jeeps.
