Most starters have two bolts - a short one and a long one. if you take out the old starter, you should reuse the old bolts.

Starter Bolt Size

you can buy them at autozone, they may even know what size you need. usually starter bolts are the same size and in some cases just the length is different. simply try the one you have in the other hole and if it works then problem solved on the size but the length may still be different.

How to replace starter ram 50 2.6

You did not list the year but i will give you the most common way.
First thing is to remove the negative battery terminal, locate starter. the starter will be at the rear of the engine near front of the transmission. There will be a small wire, remove this wire from starter, this is the trigger wire which powers up the starter when key is in the crank position.
Next is the big cable size wire located next to small wire you just removed, this is constant battery voltage from battery. remove and set aside, with battery terminal removed from battery you will not need to worry about it shorting out against frame or other metal.
All wires are removed now. next will be to remove the bolts holding the starter on.this starter may have 2 or three bolts.remove them.note some cars run a ground battery cable to starter bolt, if your has that then take note of location and put ground back on same bolt .It does not really matter which starter bolt as they all will ground but the reach is why i say to just put back on same bolt.Next is remove the starter. hope this helps, good day

All bateries are charged and car still will not start(1999 ford e350). It makes sound like the bateries were death. I want to check my starter. Where should i locate it? Thank you

Ford starters are under the engine. It will be bolted on by two or three bolts [ depending what size engine you have]/ You might consider taking down the Vin # and call your local dealer - ask them for a display that shows you where the starter is on the model.
Before you remove the starter try checking all the wires on the STARTER SOLENOID - also check the solenoid it self.

Best of it

How to replace a starter on a 1998 ford econoline van

Hi!
First you have to unplug the negative (black) on the battery.
then go under the car, by the passenger seat you'll see a coil with one big round attach to it, on coil there are the three colored wired (Red-Black- sml Red) connected to it, use a sucket wrench size 14 and 12. Then there are Two bolts size 14 connected to the main starter one on the top and one the bottom. If you get a hard time taking out the one on the top, try taking off your globcompartment by unlocking the bottom from side to side and then you'll see the top bolts of the starter. Good luck. Use reverse by putting it back.

We have 1996 Yukon. We have replaced the flywheel three times and also changed starters to see if that was the problem. We have looked at the starter/flywheel teeth mesh and noticed that the starter teeth...

it sounds like you have the wrong starter or flywheel on the truck. aif the transmission has ever been changed, it may have been changed with the wrong size. the bolts line up fine to fit the engine, but the flywheel is too small or the tooth size is off

Starter Bolt

Obviously you do not have the one missing; therefore I would do one of two things... Take out one of the others, if there three, then no problem the other will hold till you get the other two back in. If the one you lost is broken off in the bell housing, then you must take off the starter and drill out the broken bolt and you can get a replacement from the Ford dealer, Pep Boys or a junk yard.

Good luck
