Check your oil with dipstick see if water in oil also remove oil fill cap of tappet cover and see if any water is there if so you have blown head gasket or cracked head

so you are saying your car is leaking oil or using oil how quick does it use the oil like a litre a week or more?

  • james_cockbu Dec 30, 2010

if your car runs start it up then wait for it to get to operating temp and when it does check for bubbles in radiator then you have blown head gasket

  • ninotumanda Dec 30, 2010

ok i will do it 2morro,about oil maybe more than a liter a week goin to refill.thnx for ur help and suggestion it helps a lot.

if you need valve stem seals replaced now days you can do it without the removal of the head with a tool made to screw into where the spark plug goes that connects to an air compressor. the commpessor air holds the valves up against the head. you also need an overhead valve spring compresser most mechanics should now how to do it this way. i have changed several like this on toyotas holdens fords.

Sounds to me like the head gasket is blown, but there may be sealant in the system which is making it intermittently leak antifreeze into the cylinders.

A bad cylinder head gasket will also cause a compromise in compression, which will cause a lack of power.

Time to overhaul or replace the engine's head gasket, or replace the engine with one that doesn't have a blown head gasket.

Good luck on this repair.

A head gasket can break in a way that it just lets coolant into the cylinders and doesn't break in a way that it lets coolant into the oil.

The passageways of the coolant are close to the cylinders and any crack can cause a small amount of coolant to get into the cylinder(s) causing white smoke.

Now, blue tinged smoke which sometimes looks white, is a sign of oil leakage at the seals or rings or both.

If the valve stem seals need to be replaced, the head will have to be pulled. Years ago on a 1979 Honda I think it would have been about $300 in labor to do the task. But, nowadays I think it's closer to $900 to $1000 or so for labor.

It might be less expensive to find another known good engine and replacing the engine with that one, if you have a good guaranteed source.

If you burn more than 1 quart of oil per thousand miles, the oil is probably burning excessively.
If the coolant level slowly goes down in the overflow tank over the course of a week, then it's probably a slow coolant leak.

Sometimes on older engines, the engines consume both oil and coolant signalling it's time for service.

Don't worry about the smoke when your car starts it will mostly happen in cold mornings but as car heats up it should be gone its just cause the car has to heat up to a certain tempeture. Hope it helps.

I havue a 1998 ford escort sport When I first start it it blowing out white smoke It doesn't smoke anymore while driving My idling is high to 2000 rpms My car okay?

white smoke can be water in the exhaust if you park with the rear end facing up hill it will store water in the cat and take a few miles to clean out. 2000 rpms is a bit fast. should be around 800-900 rpms. it could be a sticking idle control. take it off and give it a good clean out.

Hi ,, i have a 4 litre mazda t4000 ,, its a horse truck ... it blows a fair bit of black smoke when going up hills and some white smoke when i start it up ... should i worry ... thanks

The black smoke is unburnt diesel fuel- lift your foot. When I was learning to drive diesel trucks (many years ago, in one of these trucks) I was taught that when going up hill under load, I should lift off the accelerator until it just starts to die off, then give it a little bit just to hold revs. No more black smoke.

When you start it, do you let the glow plugs heat for long enough? (Does it have them? I can't remember).

My 98 camry is idling rough at start up for 5 to 10 seconds. Then it runs fine, blowing a bit of white smoke but not much also loosing coolant out of the radiator no visible leaks.

You've got a blown head gasket, sounds small at this point, but it will get bigger. If you want to save this engine I would stop driving it.

Produced smoke while driving up the hill?

It depends on what color the smoke is. Ascending up a hill puts a heavy load on the engine, which may exhibit blow by if your piston rings are worn which is not noticed at other times. If the smoke is blue it is oil, if it is white it is coolant, black means rich condition. In either white/blue condition you want to have a mechanic look at it to perform a compression check on all cylinders.

Sounds like you blown head gasket, white smoke indicates steam,so there is water getting into engine, this is caused by blown head gasket or crack in cylinder head.
