Question about 1999 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Trans starts out fine, will upshift to 2nd while in OD position but will begin to slip at about 30-35 mph. From that point it will upshift if gear shift is placed in 2 position. Doesn't seem to go past 3rd and will struggle to maintain 45 mph. vehicle has 190000 miles but engine and trans were both replaced less than 200 miles ago. Vehivle is 1999 windstar, 3.8L

Well, whoever did the transmission needs to look at it again. It sounds like a solenoid problem internally in the transmission.or a plug, wiring,or vacuum leak

Should I keep overdrive on or off? also should keep ECT on or off?

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. I am Toyota Ed, and I will be assisting you today.

The Overdrive function allows the transmission to shift an extra time, sort of like selecting 5th gear in a 5 speed manual transmission. The Overdrive, when used, will save you gas, as the engine is no longer maintaining a high RPM at normal driving speed. Look at the tach whilst driving about 45 mph, and engage/disengage the OD. You will see the tach RPM raise when the OD is off.
More RPM = lower fuel mileage,

The ECT is a different circumstance. The ECT button is used primarily when you have a heavy load in the car, or are towing something. All the ECT button does, when it is engaged, is lengthen the shift points as the transmission upshifts. Normally, the transaxle will shift into 2nd gear at 18-21 mph. When the ECT is engaged, the transaxle will shift in the area of 22 -24 mph. In short, the ECT just makes the time to the 1-2 and the 2-3 upshift longer, to compensate for the additional load being carried/towed.

I hope my assistance answers your question.

Thanks for choosing FixYa today!

Gears spinning. can only do about 40mph. tranny fluid black. no hazards or blinkers. fuses good.

If the engine is reving, try downshifting to 2nd gear and see what happens. In fact, start in low and upshift to 2nd and see if it revs in both of those positions. It sounds like you are losing hydraulic pressure and the clutch packs are slipping. That requires a rebuilt or used trans.

Transmission flares

NO: 43-37
DATE: 2-25-2003
MODEL: MY 2001-2002 S60, V70, V70 XC
SUBJECT: Shift Quality Issues due to B4 Servo Cover Failure, 2-3 upshift harshness or flare
CHASSIS: These chassis breaks are approximate:
S60: 062000-152000
V70: 116000-230000
V70 XC: 036000-067100
TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER: The first 3 digits of the serial number on the affected transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
DESCRIPTION:
In the AW 55-50, brake number four (B4), is only applied in 3rd gear. The B4 is applied by a piston, which is covered by an aluminum cap. This cap has a steel washer crimped to its inside surface, and a rubber cushion that sits between the cover and the washer.
If this washer breaks free from the crimps it will become concaved because of the B4 piston return spring pressure.
This loose washer can cause: - " 2-3 upshift flare / slip - " Harsh 2-3 upshifts - " 3-4 upshift flare / slip - " Harsh 4-3 downshifts
Replacing the broken B4 cover with a new one (PN 30651771) will remedy these symptoms.

1998 Dodge RAM 1500 won't upshift, slips out of gear

have you dropped the pan to see whats the bands are set at, any debris in pan bottom, whats your governor pressure, if bands are ok, but gov pressures are not relative to speed 1 psi per mph up to 95-127psi, port is on pass side of case rear top right, scan tool would be very helpful, your must have mil light on for this problem, gov dtc's, replace gov transducer as gov solniod as a pair, no exceptions, also are there any 02 sensor dtc's, shorted to voltage, this wil make pcm do stupid things to trans shift, affecting gov signals. GOOD LUCK RDJRP
