Question about 1998 Mercury Villager

1 Answer

When the van is running, there is a roaring sound from the right side of the engine. It is coming from a small box, near the large hose coming from the radiator. It looks as though there is a spark plug wire running to it also.

A Large leak is almost never a gas cap, thats usually the small leak. Dodge uses cheap hoses that crack badly. Check the canister in the Engine compartment, passenger side. Then check passenger side behind the cab by the frame. 2 canisters and hoses leaving that ,often cracked. Last is a piece that connects from the hard steel lines near the oil pan....one of these three usually

Coolant temp starts running hot but most of the time, it starts back dropping down...

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Check the large hose leaving the brake power booster (under the hood, directly in front of where the driver sits, large round diaphragm). That hose will run into the top of your engine, it may be off, or the hose may be cracked.

Error codes 442 and 456 on 2003 Chrysler Town and Country

Could be the gas cap.  Do you fill the tank with the engine running?
Otherwise, check the hoses near the Evap canister.  I have 2003 T&C and had the small leak and large leak codes.  I looked at the evap cansiter and the hose coming from the fuel tank vapor line had a huge crack in it, to the point it had fallen off the evap caniser.  I trimmed the end of the hose and reconnected and voila, no codes.
The evap canister is on the driver's side of the van, underneath, slightly behind the drivers seat.
BTW, to clear the codes without an OBDII reader, remove the negative cable for 5-10 minutes (15 to be safe).  The computer resets and clears the codes, except for one that it sets saying loss of power to the memory.

The problem is a 1/8 diameter hose that runs from the front of the engine over the top and connects at the rear of engine on the drivers side. It is a vacuum hose #GM15967970 It cost about $6.22 at your GM dealer. Hope this helps Bill. My E-Mail is Uflyups@aol.com
