Possibly.
Some do need a square drive to apply pressure to the idler. But why should you need to pay for one?

Have you asked what's up with the alternator? often it's just the regulator that needs replacing - or the brushes. See HERE for examples. Too many are scrapped just for want of these.

If they haven't got the tools, take it somewhere that does know what they're doing (and buy a belt online while you're at it).

Thanks for using Fixya!

How do I reinstall the alternator belt on a 91 plymouth acclaim? I dont see a tensioner and cant get the belt back on once it is bolted in place

these have a serpentine belt and the tensioner is below the alternator and requires a special tool to move it. you can try using a wrench that will fit on the belt tensioner but you won`t have much room to move it. look under the hood around the upper rad support for a decal it may still be there. if it is it shows the belt routing and were the tensioner is.

Just replaced the supercharger belt I am trying to release the tension to get it around the supercharger pulley. How do I release the tension of the belt?

There are 2 sepentine belts on your vehicle. You must use a wrench to turn the belt tensioners. Usually a breaker-bar works well.

The tensioner for the outer belt is below the power steering pump and is easier to get to with the vehicle jacked up and the wheel and plastic splash-shield removed. The tensioner for the inner belt (the one for the supercharger) is located between the alternator and the supercharger. (see picture)

Where is the tensioner pulley located on a 1994 pontiac bonneville? and how do I adjust it to get the alternator back on? Thanx

the tensioner is located directly below where the alternator bolts on. it is an automatic adjusting tensioner so you can't adjust it . you can only move the pulley back and forth to allow slack in the drive belt.

How can i get a diagram on how to install a sepentine belt on a 2006 honda civic

Hello georgej562,

You will need a long handled box wrench on the belt tensioner from above the engine. Turn the wrench slowly in the direction shown in the pictures below. With the tension released remove the belt.

Note: The tensioner is hydraulic so turn it slow.

Install the new belt in reverse order.

FOR ROUND BELT TENSIONERS YOU CAN USE A SOCKET WRENCH OR BOX END WRENCH TO TURN CENTER BOLT COUNTERCLOCK WISE TO RELEASE BELT TENSION.WHILE SLIP BELT OFF THE ALTERNATOR. IF BELT TENSIONER NOT THE ROUND TYPE YOU NEED THE BELT TENSIONER TOOL.

How to change serpentine belt on a 2005 chrysler town and country. Is a special wrench needed for the tensioner?

There is a youtube video that shows how to change the serpentine belt/tensioner/idler, but on my 2005, the tensioner looks OEM and doe snot have a squared off end to easily use a wrench to turn.

I think I have a sepentine tool (flat with square 3/8's drive) I can use to turn the tensioner.

Changing alternator belt in 1977 Delta 88

On the older cars, the alternator was attached by two mounting bolts. The long bolt goes through the alternator and is held on by a hex nut. The short bolt goes through a slotted curved piece into the alternator and is used for adjusting tension on the belt.

Depending on the location of the alternator, it may require you to work from the top of the engine or in some cases from under the car. Determine if any other belt is blocking the alternator belt. If so, this belt will have to be removed first to access the alternator belt.

Use a little penetrating fluid (e.g. PB Blaster) on the threads of both bolts and let it soak in to loosen up any corrosion. Using two wrenches/sockets(one to hold and one to loosen), loosen the long pivot mounting bolt; but do not remove. Then use a wrench or socket to loosen the short bolt and push the alternator towards the engine to allow the belt to be removed.

Installation is the reverse. You will have to lift the alternator up and outward to tighten the belt prior to tightening the short bolt. Then tighten the long bolt. Check tension by pressing down on the midpoint along the longest span between pulleys. Belt should not deflect more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch. If it does, loosen the two bolts and re-tension (you may need a pry bar for adjustment). Some setups use an idler pulley for adjusting tension.

Replace alternator

Remove the neg. {black} battery cable. Disconect the two sets of wires from the alternator {one is bolted onto a post, the other is a plug}. Remove the tension on the belt buy moving the tensioner with a wrench or the special tool. {the tensioner is a pulley on a spring loaded arm bolted to the block, refer to the belt routing sticker under the hood} Remove the three or four bolts that mount the alternetor and remove it. The instal is the reverse of removal, the belt tension is self adjusting. Make sure the battery is charged.
