Question about 2003 Lincoln Town Car

2003 Lincoln Towncar 130 amp alternator.Red battery light illuminated on dash. Ammeter reveals 0 amps. Replaced alternator and still no change. 12 volt reading at battery terminal of alternator.Wires look fine.Any suggestions? Thanks for your help, Paul

Check the voltage regulator and check for any loose grounds or connections.

    I was suprised to look at my 2007 manual. Says theirs a fuse that goes to the voltage regulator in-on the atlernator. If you have no charge after an alternator change check that fuse.

    There is also a note about a diode thats used for accidental reverse hookup of battery.

    Alternators can fool you. When only a few of their internal diodes blow the alternator may show no problem. This problem surfaces when the car seems to charge and run good in daytime hours but leaves you stuck during nightime hours. In essense there is simply not enough amps for the headlights but just enough amps in the daytime to run the car and place a mild charge into the battery. This scenario can drive you nuts. When you check voltage at battery I recommend a check with no items on and one with all items are powered on.If the volts slowly start dropping after headlights are turned on its one of those with a couple of the alternators internal diodes still working but not all of them. Thats why no light or error code appears in the day and even in the night.

Instead of continuing to purchase batteries and alternators, why don't you take your car to a qualified mechanic and have it properly diagnosed and repaired. It certainly would be cheaper.

Testing an alternator


The short answer is no.
Most amp meters are not designed to carry all of the power the car needs like meters used before 1950.
A better choice is a volt meter.

I need to replace the alternator for my wife's 2003 Lexus RX300. Do I buy a 100 amp or a 130 amp alternator, and does it matter?


you need take old alternator with you to auto parts stores they can match up your alternator give you the correct AMP TYPE, your alternator amps is stamped on the out side alternator housing, the auto parts store can look up right amp alternator for your vechicle.when you say dont matter yes it does if you get wrong type alternator, your battery wont have good charge causing alternator fail early and battery fail early.

The charge light comes on and car tries to stop all dash lights start flickering.


sounds like you are going to need an alternator, and possible a battery. You need a digital volt meter (less than $15 at most home improvement stores) and check the voltage at the battery posts when the car is idling, it should be at least 14 volts but not more than 15 (and that should be briefly)-the battery should be at least 12.4 volts at the posts when the car has been sitting (overnight) or you might have to replace the battery too-honestly, your caddy is a killer on electrical system loads, so the alternator and battery should be replaced together, with the most heavy duty components you can get. I have a Lincoln (same boat, so to speak), and I replaced my 130 amp alternator with a 200 amp unit from DB Electrical (they are in Tennessee), and a new battery, 1000 amp @ 32 degrees, 850 @ 0 degrees, and that was 4 years ago. Still no problems, it really is necessary in these cars due to heavy electrical demands.

How do you reset warning battery & charging system light on 2003 navigator after i have changed the alternator.


This light is not like a service light, you still have a problem, and it appears that the alternator was not the issue. I reccomend getting it diagnosed, but do look for grounding issues, and clean battery terminals.

93 lincoln towncar, 66k miles, replaced starter (was bad) now after crank-up, approx 10 min driving time, anti-lock light comes on then the a/c read-out goes crazy and then it dies. Then it won't start,...


I'd check those fuses for voltage, when problem is ongoing. Those fuses are hot all the time, use a test lite. Did you check voltage drop on cables and wiring? Battery has a full charge and charging system is working correctly?
