Question about 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe

1 Answer

87000 miles. Was driving back...20 miles. On the way there, no problems, then the "check engine" light came on the way back home. Nothing audible to recognize any probs. Any ideas? jjohnson327@gmail.com

Well when the check engine come on that means the computer stored a code and you need to scan the computer to get the code. Go to an auto part store like Auto zone and they will scan it for you for free and give you the code then bring it here and i will tell you what it is. take care

You need to get the fault code scanned to be able to get an idea of where the problem is. It's possible you have a coil pack that goes bad when it heats up.

When you get a check engine light it means a fault has occurred and a fault code for that is in memory, now you need the fault codes or codes read to see what is going on and then troubleshoot the system.

If you have 25 miles to drive with that serious missfiring going on, I would first try to find a repair shop closer to you. It need not be a Volvo shop. Failing that, I would have it towed. Since the towing distance may be greater than 5 miles, investigate joining a road hazard protection program first (like AAA or others). Once signed up, then have it towed under the new protection. I think you will find it cost effective to do that rather than just calling a tow truck.

Check the battery connections on the positive post. I have a 96 Caddilac Deville and had simuliar issues. On alot if GM cars a dual booted connectors are installed on the positive/red side of the battery. Over time and battery replacements the connections wear out or become less effective causing voltage issuses in the ECM thus createing troubles through out. I removed both boots and and direct connected both leads. No more speedometer issues.

it might be the a couple of thngs...

1)catalytic converter messed up
2)oxygen sensor before or after the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.
3)belts need tightening
4)your fuel cap has not been well tightened.

go down to a mechanic and have them check your engine light. They most likely will have a computer to check and narrow down what might be the problem.
