Forgot to install the keyway or it fell out during installation, that is if you mean slip on the crank shaft.

The harmonic balancer came lose can this be fixed without replacing on a1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L

no person can answer this. nada
we cant see it. nor can we touch it.
this fails 2 ways.
some balancer's internally fail. (rubber inside turns to dust or slips)
or
the nut holding it was never set to factory torque. (lazy mechanics)

I dont think its repairable. Once they come apart, u have to toss it. Anything is "fixable" but its not worth your time or energy. It will definitely fall apart again. Now's your chanch to put in a performance one. If $$ is an issue, get one from the wrecker.

first you will need to remove the belt. then you might have to remove the electric fan. (depending on what engine you have) then you will need remove the bolt from the harmonic balancer. i think its a 21 mm. then you need to get a harmonic balancer pulley puller. you can rent one at your local auto parts store. install the puller and remove the harmonic balancer. then put new one on by using the bolt. reinstall all components in reverse. this one is pretty easy to do. please rate thank you.

1998 grand cherokee limited crankshaft crack?

To identify the crankshaft, with the belt removed, it is the only item that will turn when you crank the engine over.
I've seen harmonic balancers fail but rarely a crankshaft.
Some P/S systems will "push" some fluid out when you steer without the pump running. Concentrate on repairing/replacing the balancer, then re-diagnose the P/S problem after that is taken care of.

The rubber in the balancer has broken down and the inner and outer pieces shift and rub on the cover. You need a new balancer.
