Question about 1998 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

I am having a problem with my 98 mazda protege, 1.8l car. When i put it in drive, it takes about 2 or 3 seconds most times to really accelerate and when i am at a stop, it idles irratically, fluctuating up and down. Now if i am parked, it doesn't idle irratically, but when i put it in drive and come to a stop, that is when it does the irratic idling. I am not getting no service engine light showing up. So i was wondering what is causing the irratic idling and what is causing the delay of 2 to 3 seconds in accelerating? (just a side note: I will check the brakes to see if the front brakes are rubbing or hugging some on the rotor). Thanks.

Check the wheels and see if the drums are not tight. and also the erratic Idling Could be from your Torque converter Clutch Solenoid that doesn't work properly and if the Solenoid gets totally bad then your car will be stalling.all Well i can say is Check your transmission fluid level and your brakes. Good luck

My 1995 Mazda Protege 1.5L was running fine. We were driving home and the car cutoff, will turnover but will not crank. I can take the oil cap off and see one of the CAM's turning and turning freely

if you can see the cam shaft turning then the timing belt is ok
run the fault codes and check for crank position or cam shaft position sensor failures
one or the other or both are candidates for your problem

My 2001 mazda protege gets really loud when I accelerate just before switching gears (standard). I was wondering if this is a problem with the front exhaust. Also if run A/C to long drips on passenger side...

Exhaust system needs a visual inspection to determine defective part.
Drain hose to evaporator is clogged.Put on eye and face protection, use a soft stick object to shake the debris from the evaporator hose free. Lots of cold water will fall on you if your not
careful.

it sound like there is a problem with the synchronizers and or the gears them selves. either way you will need to have the trans rebuilt before you can not put it into any gear.

2003 Mazda protege had rough idle and wants to stall when I stop.

The idle on my 2003 Mazda Protege started acting strange one day - it kinda surged forward a little bit. Then the RPM would drop and kept wanting to stall out. It stalled out at a stop sign. The check engine light came on. I drove it immediately to my Goodyear mechanic. It ended up being the Idle Air Control Valve. They had to order the part from Mazda which took 3 days to get there. The whole thing cost $700. Runs great now (again).
