Question about Geo Metro

1 Answer

My 94 geo metro wont pass smog. fixed cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, timed it, and tested egr valve. everything passes except hc and no emissions. it runs pretty great aside from a slight lag in excel and taking a few seconds to warm till it can idle when its cold. what els would likely cause be for it not to pass smog? maybe i need to reset the carbs fuel air screws, does any one know how many turns out from all the way in and what screw is where? the thing dont burn oil, has good power aside from very slight laging, runs and sounds great, i dont get it.

SOURCE: laging 1994 metro geo that is losing horse power

If your geo is losing power ,first thing to do is a comprision test .
if its testing any thing below 100 psi you may have to replace the piston rings.

SOURCE: 1991 Honda Accord LX failed emission test on smog

not enough info. Typically, CO and HC together can be the result of poor fuel control or misfire, or worn components such as O2 sensor or catalytic converter, but without more data, repair recommendations are likely to waste money and not achieve success.

Has anyone tried adjusting the fuel air mixture?

Based on what I am reading this is a gas engine and I am also assuming it is fuel injected. (Or does it have throttle body fuel injection?)

I suspect a case of dirty fuel injectors at the moment. They will need to be removed and cleaned.

If you have throttle body fuel injection then you will need the fuel air mixture adjusted.

If you respond can you let us know the "engine size" that is installed please. It would help us to help you in troubleshooting.

Thanks for using Fixya. Kelly.

How to tune up a 1995 Geo Prizm? not passing smog, They told me to tune up and get new cataylic converter, but wont guarantee it will pass smog test.

A tune is just replacing the spark plugs every 100,000 miles and the air filter every 30,000, clean oil is also a help in passing smog, the new converter is what will most likely do the trick.

94 geo metro won't start. possibly fuel problem. has trouble when i hit gas to make up a hill and misses, no transmission or spark plug problems. HELP!

Do a complete tune up plugs wires cap rotor. The spark gets stronger when your accelerating and this is when some electrical problems break down.

Emissions level HC (PPM) too high in truck. How to fix?

Do an oil change with 20W50 oil (or one grade higher) to prevent blow by during the test.

You current oil has HC from blow by though the rings.

Do a fresh oil change will lower the HC.

Change spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor if they are over 24,000 miles

Make the smog check appointment for the EARLY MORNING. Colder air will help the fuel burn better.

Clean or change the air filter and pcv valve.

Clean Mass Air Flow sensor with CRC Mass Air flow cleaner or electronic part cleaner.

Do a quick wipe down on the wires and cap to take the moisture off.

Check spark plug wire contacts for corrosion.

Fill the tank to around 3/4.......just in case your fuel pump is weak.

Ran the truck for 20+ minutes on highway before the test.

Do not carry excessive cargo on the truck bed.

These are the little things I would do to get the HC and CO down.

Please post more information on the comment window.
