Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

My Alero has been leaking coolant heavily for the last few months. It has been checked for leaks in all hoses surrounding radiator, the system has been flushed and refilled, water pump replaced, thermostat replaced, and still it keeps kicking out fluid behind the front right side tire. I need this car to get me through about six more months, so I don't want to spend a fortune repairing it. I was told it could be the timing cover gasket, but it will cost me upwards of $500 to have that repaired at a shop. I would like to know if that can be done outside a shop and what would be required in the way of tools, steps, etc.

If you need a quik fix, try aluma seal, maybe use 2 , just add them to your coolant and run engine till warms up, sometimes you need to use longer before leak stops. it is relatively inexpensive and available anywere you find automotive parts, or try another qualty rad stop leak. when you checked for leaks before did you have system under full pressure?

Has anyone checked the heater core, "behind the front right side tire" sounds like it's got a leak, you can bypass it.

Coolant is Low but there is no leak.

Since the cooling system is sealed, if there is no external leak, the engine may be burning coolant out the tail pipe due to a leaking head gasket.
You may want to try a different shop for a second opinion.

My 1998 jimmy has always leaked antifreeze but the last month it has got bad to were i have to fill it up everyday

You need to get or rent a coolant system tester and identify where it is leaking from. They are very simple to use. You just remove your radiator cap and install the tester and pump up the cooling system and then you watch for where the coolant is coming from. Look closely at your water pump, intake manifold gasket, radiator, heater hose coupler on the intake manifold, and coolant hoses. Those are all the common leak areas.

Why my oldsmobile alero 1999 wont keep water in

CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND THE RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BETWEEN COOLING FANS AND RADIATOR SIDES FOR SIGNS OF ANTIFREEZE.CHECK ALL RADIATORS HOSES AND HEATER HOSES.IF ALL LOOK GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL FOR COOLANT LEAKS.IF OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE COOLANT LEAKING IN CRANK CASE.YOU HAVE A HEAD GASKET LEAK.YOU NEED TO CHANGE OIL + FILTER. GET THE HEAD GASKET FIX.BECAUSE LEAK IN THE CRANK CASE WILL LOCK UP THE ENGINE.IF CRANK CASE OIL LOOKS OKAY.YOU DONT HAVE THE COOLANT CORRECT MIXTURE.YOU SHOULD HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER.

I have 2001 alero. Yesterday the coolant light came on and the engine just died. Any ideas maybe fuel pump or timing belt or could it be the water pump

IF LOW COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON ENGINE SHUT OFF BECAUSE IT GOT TOO HOT AND OVER HEATED.WHEN YOU HAVE LOW COOLANT.YOU COULD HAVE LEAKING RADIATOR.YOU COULD HAVE LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES AND WATER PUMP. ADD MORE COOLANT IN CAR RADIATOR UNTIL YOU AT FULL COLD MARK ON THE OVER FLOW COOLANT TANK START THE CAR LET IDLE UNTIL ENGINE GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE.RAISE YOUR HOOD LOOK FOR LEAKS THE RADIATOR PRESSURE WILL PUSH COOLANT OUT WHERE LEAKS COULD BE.LOOK AROUND RADIATOR AND COOLANT HOSES.LOOK AT WATER PUMP.IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING AT WATER PUMP REPLACE IT.

CHECK AROUND WATER PUMP AREA.AND THERMOSTAT HOUSING FOR LEAKS.THE MECHANIC WHO PUT THE WATER PUMP ON MAY FORGOT TO PUT SEALANT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WATER PUMP GASKET CAUSING LEAKS.LOOK AROUND THERMOSTAT HOUSING FOR LEAKING.IF THERMOSTAT SEAL WAS DAMAGE DURING INSTALLATION IT WILL CAUSE LEAKING.IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND RADIATOR .CHECK RADIATOR TOP AND BOTTOM HOSES FOR LEAKS AND CHECK HEATER PIPES AND HEATER CORES HOSES FOR LEAKS.IF ALL HOSES GOOD.CHECK FOR LEAKING CORE PLUGS.

No heat. runs out of anti-freeze often.

check for anti - freeze leaks around radiator.look down at radiator where coolant fan is look see if it looks wet below radiator. the radiator is leaking.check all coolant hoses.also check water pump to see if its leaking by the weep hole.if all check out good you could have a intake leak.
