I replaced the idler pulley in my car,The bolt that secures the pulley to the tenioner won't lock but tightens.I can get no leverage to get belt on? Any suggestions with out replacing tensioner arm

you don't lever belts at all as it breaks the bindings in the belt
the nut on the shaft that holds the pulley on has to be loosened and then the small bolt at the back of the tensioner mount will move the pulley shaft up or down to adjust the belt tension
so move the pulley shaft to the point where the belt just slips into the pulley groove and then tighten the bolt up until tension is on the belt
tighten up the nut holding the pulley on
If you have the spacer s in the right position then that nut will tighten up securely and retain the tension on the belt

How do you let the tenion off the pulley

undo the nut of the shaft that the pulley is on There should be a long bolt behind the pulley assemble the you can turn and it pulls/pushes the pulley shaft to loosen /tighten the belt. Some have a small gear that you can turn which does the same thing. Just loosen the shaft nut first and make sure you re-tension when finished.

I need to fit a fan belt on a peugeot 306 estate

just in front of the altenator, there is a 10mm bolt, tighten that and it will tighten the fan belt .
these belts are quite tight, make sure the one you have is the correct length, sometimes the suppliers will send one that is close to the correct size, and is sometimes a few milimeters smaller.

You dont normally have to loosen anything else, but the easiest way is to put the belt on the alternator, tensioner and power steering first, then ease the belt over the ridge of the crankshaft last, one rib at a time, but evenly all the way around the pulley.

1998 Dodge Avenger serpentine belt issue

What size of motor, do you have a/c and which belt are you replacing? Not sure about your engine size since you did not list it so please pick the applicable motor:

Sebring Coupe And Avenger (2.5L VIN N Engine)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the tension pulley locknut.
  3. Rotate the adjusting bolt to decrease the belt tension.
  4. Remove the drive belt from the engine.
To install:
  1. Position the replacement belt around the pulleys, making sure the belt routing is correct.
  2. Adjust the belt by rotating the adjusting bolt until the correct tension is reached. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section for belt adjustment.
  3. Once the desired tension is reached, secure the locknut. Recheck the belt tension.
  4. After the belt is installed and adjusted properly, tighten the locknut to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

Can not tighten the serpentine belt

The screeching is probably from the belt being loose and the wheels spinning on the belt You may want to get a new belt and before you replace it make sure that the automatic belt tensioner is working correctly put a wrench on the wheel with bolt and make sure it moves back and forth should feel tensionlike a heavy duty spring attached to it then make sure that you route the new belt correctly look on hood for a diagram or invest in a book that shows the correct route

How to install belt tensioner

Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2. Remove the drive belt tensioner bolt.
  3. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
Installation Procedure
  1. Install the drive belt tensioner.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  3. Install the drive belt tensioner bolt.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  5. Install the drive beltacf5284.gif
