Check engine light comes on upon start up

I have a 1994 oldsmobile 98 regency. The check engine light will occasionally come on and remain on until I turn the engine off. All other start ups will be normal until after several more times the check engine light will appear again. The car continues to run fine even with the check engine light on. I 've had the car at different shops with the following codes on my computer read out. ( P0321/P1361 ). They inspected vehicle and had history code for ignition control module and also speed reference circuit - P0321/P1361 . They tested system and mentioned a short may be present with the crank sensor. Any suggestions regarding troubleshooting will be appreciated.

Alot of cars show a crankposition sensor on a test if it was bad car would not run unless you have a problem with car stalling or running bad when it gets hot not a ignition module if car still runs good not a major problem one problem would be a bad 02 sensor does not mess with car alot gas milage loss mabe slight hesitaion look at sensors that dont mess with engine if not 02

SOURCE: check engine light comes on upon start up

Yes the shops technician got it right. as per the error code which you mentioned. These 2 codes are usually caused by a faulty crankshaft sensor (P0321) & possibly an ignition module (P1361). When replacing these parts part attention to the female electrical terminals in each connection. They will sometimes "spread" & cause an intermitten open circuit. Check each female electrical terminal with an opposing male terminal. There should be a small amount of "drag" when connecting the two of them. Thanks.Helpmech.

May be the Idle air Control Valve (IAC) . Suggest you do the search for both the TPS and IAC. There's a wealth of info on how to test, clean replace the sensors on the 3.8 engine.

My 1994 oldsmobile 98 regency won't start

Check fuel pressure, spark. If no spark possible crank sensor or ignition module. If no fuel pressure tap the bottom of the fuel tank with a mallet while someone is cranking the vehicle if it starts then you will need a fuel pump. Also if you have spark and fuel but the engine feels like it bucking while turning over, take a hair dryer and heat the coils up.you may have a bad coil pack. After they get warmed it night then start as the coil resistance changes.

Where is the starter for a 1995 oldsmobile 98 regency elite

The starter motor for your Oldsmobile is mounted at the front lower part of the engine, just behind the radiator.
Book time to replace by an experience person is 1.1 hours.
If you are looking to do this yourself, disconnect the battery negative terminal and isolate it.
Remove any covers or braces in order to access and remove the starter.
Remove the wires to the solenoid on the starter, then the bolts retaining the starter to the engine.
There may be some shims between the starter and the engine. You may need to replace these with the new starter.
Hope your repair goes well.

98 oldmobile regency won't start up and check

Well the fact that the traction light came on and blinked off when taking off is a good thing, it just means that your traction control is working properly. When that light comes on it means that one wheel was spinning and that the car adjusted the speed of the drive wheels to compensate. The car not starting needs to be addressed as to whether the car is turning over slowly, clicking, or making no noise at all. The check engine light will remain on until the vehicle is started, so that does not correlate to your problem. If it clicks, or turns over sluggishly, then it just needs a jump start and a test of the battery. If the lights come on, but the car does not turn over al all, then you may need to look at replacing a starter.
