Usually a sign of something draining the battery.
The machine test probably showed the battery could hold a charge and the alternator was charging the battery.
You may need to have someone check for a power drain.
When the key switch is off, there may be a weak short to ground or a relay or component that is using power.

Generator is good, new ignition, new battery. Car started up right away, drove 20min. Now won't start?

Tell us more details.
For example, how do you know the alternator really is good?
You say new "ignition", but that could be the ignition switch, plug wires, distributor, etc.
Regardless if the battery was new, you can easily drain the battery in less then 20 minutes, so we need to know if the battery still has a charge or not. Put a test light or volt meter across it.
We also need to know if it does nothing, not even drain the lights, or if it clicks at the solenoid?
The best would be if you put a voltmeter across the battery.
If the ignition switch is bad, then nothing at all with happen.
If the battery is bad, it will start around 12 volts, but drop down below 9 and not come back up when you stop trying.
It is drops but comes back up, it is probably the starter.
But you could try turning the engine over by hand on the alternator nut, because it could be seizing up from a bad bearing.
Try jump starting it also.
If that helps, then check the voltage when reved up.
It if does not reach over 13.5 volts, the alternator is not working.

1989 BMW 750 iL (battery goes down very fast and engine stops)

High Lucien,
I would like you to check a few things on the battery. First thing is it a sealed no matenance type or can you pop the two tops off with a screw driver? If so I want you to look down in to the little holes and see if the water level is showing water visable to your eyes in each one. If any of them show no water at all then fill it/them up to where the others are about an inch below the top of the hole. If this was the case you can now replace the caps by tapping on them with a hammer or some other blunt object until they are solidly closed back up. In order not to get any splash on you then get the caps set in the holes fimly and set a rag over them and then hit them with a good tap as many times as it takes to get them flush down with the battery again.
Now you can start the car again and let it charge for a while and see if it will restart after the 30 minutes. If not then you need to get a good charge on it by driving it around and then when you get it parked take the negative battery cable off quicky. You may want to have it off once first so you know it will come off quickly when your ready. When you are finished driving it and get back to park it and the cable is off let it stand another 30 minutes or how ever long it was taking before to run it down. With the cable off nothing in the car can drain it and if it will not start the car after the wait time then it is the battery has gone bad and nothing wrong with the car. By a new battery for 20 bucks at a wrecking yard. They give guarantees. It will save yo 30 bucks. If you are determend to buy a brand new battery then take your old one with you to Walmart because they give you a $15.00 rebait off the price of the new one for the core battery.

If the battery is good and strong when you go to start the car after the above tests and it is dead again in 30 min. or how ever long it used to take then yes we need to look into a short. But not even headlights on should drain a good battery that fast. Keep me informed and please give me a good vote when were through. Raz

Car wont start

I think you have a bad fuseable link. Also,
I suspect your alternator is not charging your battery.

You have power with the new one, and it ran for the 20 minutes on your old battery. There also may be a
starter relay unit under the hood.

Check the battery terminals for corrosion. Remove both the positive and negative leads to the battery, and use a brass brush to remove the salt-looking build up. For added security, you can purchase dielectric grease from an auto parts store to ensure a good connection.

If this does not solve the problem, Bring the battery to batteries plus for a free battery check. If your battery is the issue, it may need to be replaced. If none of these solutions works, it may be an alternator problem or something unrelated to the electrical system (such as a fuel filter).
