Question about 1997 Ford Expedition

I have a 97 expedition. idles rough to the point where it wants to stall. i have replaced egr valve, egr vacuum solenoid, pvc valve. even bought a new air cleaner with all new sensors. any ideas? thanks.

Follow the pvc valve hose to the intake manifold it will be burn on the elbow ....check for intake manifold leaks

How do I correct high idle problem

Year/make/model??? Applying vacuum to the EGR and making the valve open will not be the correction. Once opened, this valve allows unburned exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber resulting in a rich mixture. The computer sees this rich mixture and reduces the injector pulse allowing the idle to slightly lower. If the vehicle were at proper idle speed and this valve is opened, it would run rough snd possibly stall

Where is the egr valve on a 99 Ford expedition

The EGR valve is in a very difficult spot to work on. If the EGR is bad it will set off the check engine light and make the vehicle run rough or stall at idle. It really doesn't make it run rough while driving or accelerating. What are the conditions when the car runs rough?

It sounds like a vacuum problem is keeping the EGR valve open causing the other sensors to read this and more fuel would be injected by the ECM. u may of gotten an egr code but the problem is not the valve itself.

Egr vacuum at idle

See if the port going in to the intake from the egr is blocked, the port is big on the egr end and goes down in size and can clog.

My 2002 Mercury Mountaineer idles rough, I changed pugs, coil and also took it to 2 different mechanics. Recently the code came on for P1400 . . .Im just wondering can this be the cause of the rough idle?

Hi, if your EGR valve is stuck open, it could cause a rough idle. P1400 indicates there is a problem with the EGR flowmeter. This may be the result of a valve that is stuck open or may be the cause or may be unrelated. What I recommend is to first check the vacuum hoses on the sensor/flowmeter and also check the hoses from the EGR solenoid to the EGR valve and from the intake manifold to the solenoid. If those are good, remove the EGR valve and inspect the EGR passages for blockage. Also check the valve for properoperation. The valve should default closed and open when engine vacuum is applied to the vacuum port. If you cannot find anything wrong, with the valve or passages, test the control solenoid that supplies vacuum to the EGR valve. It should click open when you apply 12 volts to it. If all this is good, check the wiring from the flowmeter to the computer for continuity. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

EGR flow in our 2000 Ford Expedition is insufficient. What does this mean?

Exhaust gas recirculation flow reduced. Could be caused by valve or gunk in the flow path. I'll paste a little bit about troubleshooting below. If you need specific instructions for repairing your system, please reply with your engine size/type.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is designed to reintroduce exhaust gas into the combustion chambers, thereby lowering combustion temperatures and reducing the formation of Oxides of Nitrogen (NO x ).
The amount of exhaust gas that is reintroduced into the combustion cycle is determined by several factors, such as: engine speed, engine vacuum, exhaust system backpressure, coolant temperature, throttle position. All EGR valves are vacuum operated. The EGR vacuum diagram for your particular vehicle is displayed on the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label.
The EGR system is Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) system, controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and composed of the following components: DPFE sensor (also referred to as the backpressure transducer), EGR Vacuum Regulator (EVR) solenoid, EGR valve, and assorted hoses.


DPFE Sensor

  1. Disconnect the pressure hoses at the DPFE sensor.
  2. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the downstream pickup marked REF on the sensor.
  3. Using a multimeter, backprobe the SIG RTN circuit at the DPFE connector.
  4. With the ignition ON , signal voltage should be 0.20-0.70 volts.
  5. Apply 8-9 in. Hg of vacuum to the sensor. Voltage should be greater than 4 volts.
  6. Quickly release the vacuum from the sensor. Voltage should drop to less than 1 volt in 3 seconds.
  7. If the sensor does not respond as specified, check the power and ground circuits.
  8. If power and ground circuits are functional, the sensor is faulty.

EGR Valve Control Solenoid
  1. Remove the EVR solenoid.
  2. Attempt to lightly blow air into the EVR solenoid.
    1. If air blows through the solenoid, replace the solenoid with a new one.
    2. If air does not pass freely through the solenoid, continue with the test.

  3. Apply battery voltage (approximately 12 volts) and a ground to the EVR solenoid electrical terminals. Attempt to lightly blow air, once again, through the solenoid.
    1. If air does not pass through the solenoid, replace the solenoid with a new one.
    2. If air does not flow through the solenoid, the solenoid is OK.

  4. If the solenoid is functional but the problem still exists, check the power and ground circuits.

EGR Valve
  1. Install a tachometer on the engine, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Detach the engine wiring harness connector from the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid.
  3. Disconnect and plug the vacuum supply hose from the EGR valve.
  4. Start the engine, then apply the parking brake, block the rear wheels and position the transmission in Neutral.
  5. Observe and note the idle speed.

If the engine will not idle with the IAC solenoid disconnected, provide an air bypass to the engine by slightly opening the throttle plate or by creating an intake vacuum leak. Do not allow the idle speed to exceed typical idle rpm.
  1. Using a hand-held vacuum pump, slowly apply 5-10 in. Hg (17-34 kPa) of vacuum to the EGR valve nipple.
    1. If the idle speed drops more than 100 rpm with the vacuum applied and returns to normal after the vacuum is removed, the EGR valve is OK.
    2. If the idle speed does not drop more than 100 rpm with the vacuum applied and return to normal after the vacuum is removed, inspect the EGR valve for a blockage; clean it if a blockage is found. Replace the EGR valve if no blockage is found, or if cleaning the valve does not remedy the malfunction.

My 04 f150 had a rough idle and would sometimes stall out. dealer said it was throttle body so I replaced. The idle is still rough but it it doesn't stall. Could it be a coil pack? if so do I need to...

I have a 2005 f150,with a 4.6 and it idles rough and when you turn on the ac it wants to die. Checked the codes and there are no codes.Any suggestions?

I have a 2000 Exp 5.4. I get the lean codes for both banks

Check the egr valve operation and make sure it is not sticking.If you have a scan tool and a hand help vacuum pump.While monitoring the dpfegr voltage on the scanner remove the vacuum hose to the egr and install the vacuum pump.Slightly increase idle so it does not stall and pump egr open then release the vacuum.Do this 8 times and then check the voltage with the scanner and make sure it does not increase more then 0.03v.If it does then replace the egr valve.There is a tsb for this concern.The number is 05-4-17.If you don`t have access to these tools then try tapping the egr valve and see if the rough idle stops.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Ruff idle(new plugs installed) runs great

rough idling can be caused by dirty air filter.dirty throttle valve and bore.vacuum leak at egr valve and pvc valve.also idling too low.will cause rough idling.
