The light will come on if the system is over charging. No system I know of charges at 18 volts. That is way too much. You need to have the alternator checked out. Most system charge at 14.5 to 15 volts at the most. You will burn out something major if not fixed. you can go by most auto part stores and they will check it out for free.

Your voltage regulator has failed. It is part of the alternator. If you are real handy you could take the alternator apart and replace it. If it was me, I'd just replace the whole alternator because if the voltage regulator is bad, chances are that the alternator isn't far behind. Do it soon because you will overheat the battery by over charging it and it could potentially explode.

SOURCE: low volts light stays on

new altenator or junkyard one.if new return it, if junkyard just ignore light as its odds on they will not change it .the red light is caused by the difference in the voltage between input and output voltages .Quick test --start engine and run at 1500rpm disconnect battery and turn everything electrical on and if engine stops then change altenator if it stays running then altenator is OK

SOURCE: 2000 Windstar no charge light

Check all connections to alt. and battery to make sure they are clean and tight, as it sounds like a loose or dirty connection someplace. Possibly something not tightened completely after battery and alt. replaced? (just enough to get the annoying light to go on occasionally)

SOURCE: battery trouble light stays on

14.6 volts sounds a little bit high. I would have the alternator tested. Sounds like a possible voltage regulator problem.

Have replaced battery and alternator now battery light stays on

14.2 is perfect as far as voltage is concerned bt ther could be other issues. Was it a new alternator. A used alternator couldhave bad diodes giving you a false light. Most of the franchise parts houses such as autozone advance some others,do a charging system electrical check at no charge. That would be my advice to you as well as having them clear the computer. Good luck to you.

How to do BSI reset on Peugeot 206

A meter will show a charge from an alternator but what charge was it . IF it is not 14.5 volts and DC volts not ac volts then the alternator is not working properly and that is why the light is staying on. Best have the electrics checked out at an accredited auto electrician shop.

On my 1991 camery the alternator was not charging battery. I replaced old alternator with NAPA rebuid. Now it charges between 16 to 18 volts, and when above 2000 rpm the break and batt charge lights both...

I think the voltage regulator on your replacement alternator is faulty, and is not holding voltage down far enough. 16-18 volts is far too much.

Electrical power system service required.....ABS warning light, generator warning light, brake stalled and wont't restart

usually caused by failed generator. Fix the generator and other lights will also extinguish. The car should jump start, but will not stay running without a charged battery. Recommend removing the generator and take to parts store for testing. Would you like instructions for removing generator?

Check charging system light comes on and stays on. battery light is also lit up. Just started today doing it only at accleration then it stayed on constatnt tonight

Check the drive belt and all the pulleys to make sure the belt is not slipping, then check the voltage at the battery with the ac on high blower, and the headlights on.It should read 13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts, any less then replace the alternator.Check this with any kind of DC volt meter that will go up to 18 at least.

Alternator may be overcharging?

Yes It sounds like the voltage regulator inside the alternator has gone wide open .It can also ruin your battery and explode the battery.I would have it hooked up to a alternator tester and just to make sure it's not just your gauge.hope this helps
