Question about 1996 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

1996 Jimmy When attempting to start, the engine it is turning over and it seems to be getting fuel judging from the gas fumes, but it's not firing up. This seems worse in rainy days. I've assumed I had some bad wiring, but I've also recently noticed the the RPM gauge is not always moving even when the engine is being turned at a fairly fast rate when attempting to start. Do I just have some bad wiring, or do I have something else in addition such as a timing issue?

It could be its a little hard to say with out looking at it. Are you getting any engine codes MIL light on service engine soon light if so you clould have the codes read an auto parts store will do this at no charge. But if not then i would check the plug wires and the dist cap for ripeds or damaged connectors burns in the wires and the cap for cracks or exseive ware on the contacts or striker on the rotor. The wires should be replaced every 5or 6 years and the plugs and cap and rotor every 40,000 or so If you start the engine when its dark some times you can see a bad wire sparking and jumping to ground move the wires around with a peice of wood or plastic to see if they jump. I have the same year truck but its a blazer but there the same thing but i don't realy have enough inforamtion to tell you this will solve all of your problems but i do have the factory manuals for it so try this and see and if you need more information i can help i know how problematic these vehicle can be i had to rebuild mine compeletly

Turns over like it is out of gas, won't start

Check fuel pump. Turn on the ignition an lesen for the pump to prime the fuel line. Fuel/Fire/Air the three elements required for combustion. You would usually smell raw gas fumes coming from the tailpipe when you crank the engine if you fuel delivery is working. A quick check to determine if you have a fuel problem: Remove the air filter and gain access to the throttle body, open the throttle plate and spray some starter fluid in the chamber. If the car starts for a moment, you probably have a fuel problem. Check for spark.

I had a 2000 gmc jimmy. It burns a tremendous amount of gas and strong gas fumes but no leaks what can the problem be?

Sounds like the engine may be getting extra fuel. You need to check your fuel pressure and see what is up. It may be your fuel injectors. Try to get a code if check engine light is on. Is it stalling any? If not, you need a code. Check all fuel components. If you have a question, contact me. I am here to help in anyway I can.

Turns over well but is slow to fire off sometime. Can smell gas fumes inside the car as well as the outside. No black smoke from ehaust and no fuel leaks.

if you smell gas YOU DO have a fuel leak.... make sure your gas cap is good and or tight, also might want to look at your fuel pressure regulator.. the fuel system is pretty simple... let me know!

Turns over just wont start

If a engine won't start ...................the cheapest thing to do is to check fuel and or fire.maybe there is no fuel getting to the engine or it may not be firing .

1996 GMC Jimmy Need help trouble shooting. Turns over but won't

Fuel pump or injector assembly. Need to know what the fuel pressure is before throwing a part at it. By what you are saying I'm leaning tword the fuel pump. Make sure the wires at the top of the sending unit are not burn. There is a small 4 wire connector on the inside of the sending unit. If it's burnt you will need to replace both the pump and sending unit.

My 2000 Jimmy won't start, I can hear the fuel pump running and then shutting off before I attempt to start the engine. I also hear it running while I attemp to start the engine. The engine won't start...

The pump is working normally the reason it stops before you start the engine is it has built up enough preasure and cuts out. When you turn over the engine it starts up again as the preasure goes down when the carburator open's. The pump only helps the fuel from the tank. It seem's like dirt in your carburator. The reason it wont start after 3 minutes is the excess petrol in the carburator has evaporated hence need to pour more in. Check all pipes filters and carburator for dirt.

1996 gmc jimmy 4.3 very hard to start hot or cold

It sounds like you have a pin hole in the hose that goes to the fuel pump in the gas tank. The pump is mounted on springs and it is common for the plastic hose to get a hole rubbed in it from one of the springs. This usually cause the vehicle to be real hard to get started when it is cold.

1997 GMC Jimmy will not start! Prior problems!

Fuel pump. Listen for sound of pump when you first turn key. Have someone listen at tank when you first turn key. Costly part but most successful fix for most fuel problems.
