What is the problem? Does the speedometer work? If it doesn't work and you have a speedometer cable, yes, check the cable. Also check cable gear in tranny. Go from there.

If electronic speedometer then you probably have a vss that relays the speed.

Broken Speedometer on my '84 S-10.

HI. If your speedometer needle doesn't move, or if it flutters, your speedometer cable may be bad.

To determine if it is the cable, disconnect the cable casing from the transmission and from the back of the speedometer on the instrument panel. Draw the cable out from inside of the casing. The cable looks like a twisted piece or wire. If the cable is broken or if it is dry or brittle. It probably needs to be replaced. If the cable is intact and the same length as the cable casing, the problem is likely the speedometer head.

I would also advise to check the speedometer gear as well.

The speedometer gear is located on the output shaft. Inspect it for damage.

This gear rarely suffers damage because the gear from the speedometer that meshes with it is usually made of a softer material. Sometimes, the speedometer gear on the main-shaft is replaceable. A clip can hold it in place or it can be a pressed fit. A special puller is available to pull these gears on the car.

Changing speedo cable on peaugot 306 m reg

Note: On later models an electronic transducer providers road speed signals to the speedometer and engine management system and speedometer drive cable is not fitted.

1, Working in the engine compartment, pull the cable securing pin from the gearbox/transmission housing. then release the end of the cable from the gearbox.

2, Pull the speedometer cable sharply to release the cable ball from the locating grommet in the bulkhead.

3, Pull the cable through the bulkhead grommet into the engine compartment, and withdraw it from the car.

4, REFITTING, is reversal of the removal, but coat the cable ball with some soapy water( eg washing up liquid) to aid refitting, and ensure that itis correctly located on the bulkhead grommet.

I hope this as helped!!

You definitely don't need a kickdown cable, the kickdown is for the auto transmission, you may just need a new gauge cluster. also the cable you got from autozone could be a universal cable thats why it doesn't look the same, or it could just be a wrong cable, try napa.

Speedometer

You need to find out if your speedometer is cable driven or electronic. If it is cable driven there will be a cable running from your transmission to the back of the speedometer. Sometimes the cables lose their lubrication and break. Usually pretty cheap to replace.

If your speedometer is electronic there is a sensor on your transmission that sends a signal to your speedometer. Either your sensor (called a Vehicle Speed Sensor or VSS) went bad or your speedometer quit working. The sensors are usually inexpensive....the speedometers are NOT! Last one I needed I bought off eBay and purchased one with the lowest miles I could find. If you ever sell the car you have to mark the title that the speedometer is not correct. I usually keep the old speedometer around along with a record of the mileage of the replacement so I can always figure out the cars true mileage if I need to.
