Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

When the engine is warm my 2000 grand cherokee, 6 cyl, will not maintain a steady speed when driving over 50 mph. The problem occurs over generally flat roads, with or without cruise control.

When a problem like this occurs there are test that must be performed to isolate the cause, the first and most important test is to check the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for system fault codes, next is to monitor the fuel pressure from the electric fuel pump to see if it dropping off when the truck loses power. To perform these tests takes a special electronic scanner with live data stream functions and also a special fuel electronic fuel pressure transducer that attaches to the fuel rail and allows you to safely read the fuel pressure while moving without the fear of fuel leaking into the passenger compartment. Both of these tools cost allot of money (approx $500) so buying them and using them once or twice is not cost effective, so I suggest you have a diagnostic done at the Jeep dealer, then you can perform the needed repairs recommended by the Jeep dealer.

Hi

One of 2 things to have checked first, the MAF sensor and the EGR valve, both could cause the issue but hard to say without daignostic code.

The code means cylinder one is not producing power.
The problem could be spark, fuel, or something mechanical.

Drive cycle


Here is the OBD2 emission system drive cycle test procedure.
Engine coolant temp must be below 70c (158f) before starting the engine for either the first or second trip
The fuel level should be less than 1/2 full
First trip:
Start engine, idle for at least 1.5 minutes
Drive 3 minutes, hold b/f schdl: 1.5-2.0 msec, selector lever "3rd" eng rpm 1,800-2,000 A/C switch:ON Hold the recommended b/f schdl range. Allow road speed to vary as necessary.
Drive at 55-65 mph for 1.5 min b/f schdl 2.0-3.2 msec, selector lever "5th" Engine rpm 2,200-3,000
IGN "off" for at least 10 seconds (not more than 5 min)
Dive at 50-60 mph for 3 minutes Selector lever "4th" keep engine speed above 3,000 rpm Allow speed to vary if necessary. Do not decelerate for more than 3 consecutive seconds. A/C switch ON.
Drive at a steady state cruise of 53-58mhp b/f schdl more than 1.8 msec selector lever "5th" eng rpm 2,400-2,600
Downshift to "4th" and decel more than 5 seconds without breaking, then idle for 1 minute.
Drive two minutes b/f schdl less than 2.0 msec Accelerate to 41 mph, decelerate to 34 mph, accelerate to 41mph. Do not completely release the accelerator. A/C switch off.
Idle 1 minute in park or neutral
Drive two minutes Steady state cruise at 31-44 mph. Selector lever "4th" A/C switch OFF. Hold the accelerator pedal as steady as possible. Allow speed to change if necessary.
End of first trip. Turn the key off the begin the second trip.
Second trip:
Start engine, idle for at least 1.5 minutes
Drive 3 minutes, hold b/f schdl: 1.5-2.0 msec, selector lever "3rd" eng rpm 1,800-2,000 A/C switch:ON Hold the recommended b/f schdl range. Allow road speed to vary as necessary.

I especially like the part where they want you to add four gallons of fuel. Not three gallons, not five gallons, four gallons. Gotta love those Nissan engineers. ...and of course they state that if the trace is not followed exactly (i.e. you botch the acceleration/deceleration) you have to start all over again from scratch

There are several things you can do. Make sure the engine is in good tune, replace the air filter, Air the tires up to 34 pounds air pressure to lessen the rolling resistance, How you drive is most important. Take off from traffic light and stop signs slowly. accelerate steady, don't be in a hurry to reach cruising speed, unless, of course, you are merging with fast traffic. Anticipate stops. Start slowing down sooner when coming to a stop sign or traffic signal. Coast on the downhill streets, and use the cruise control as much as possible. Don't waste gas warming up your vehicle in cold weather. It will warm up quickly while you are driving. Any time spent idling is zero miles per gallon.

U have to operate the engine at all kinds of diff speeds and drive modes, it is called a OBDII drive cycle, here is how u do one.
1. As soon as the engine starts, idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C and rear defrost on. OBDII checks oxygen sensor heater circuits, air pump and EVAP purge.

2. Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle. OBDII checks for ignition misfire, fuel2_bing.gif trim and canister purge.

3. Hold at a steady state speed of 55 mph for three minutes.

OBDII monitors EGR, air pump, O2 sensors and canister purge.

4. Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking or depressing the clutch. OBDII checks EGR and purge functions.

5. Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at half throttle. OBDII checks misfire, fuel trim and purge again.

6. Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes.

OBDII monitors catalytic converter efficiency, misfire, EGR, fuel trim, oxygen sensors and purge functions.

7. Decelerate (coast down) to a stop without braking. OBDII makes a final check of EGR and canister purge

Monitor Reset


The following conditions must occur to complete a Trip and test all OBD II monitors and components including the Catalyst Efficiency Monitor:
-- The misfire, comprehensive component, and adaptive fuel monitors are checked continuously from engine warm-up and can complete any time.
-- The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) monitor test requires a series of idles and accelerations.
-- The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) monitor requires a steady speed drive for approximately 1 minute at 30 to 40 mph.
-- The catalyst efficiency monitor requires a steady speed drive for 1 minute and 20 seconds beyond the HO2S monitor test at 40 to 65 mph.
If you cut engine off before test are completed then you must wait for a 6 hour cool down before monitors will run again.

Stick shift # Automatic RPM


That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.
