I am driving a Ford Focus 2003; a fuel light came on - will another light come on before running out of gas? Or is it only one light? Thank you.

There is only one light. When it comes on, you are very near running out of gas. Running out of gas in today's engines creates all kinds of starting problems. Gas up now.

Hi

Just one light. You should get about 25 miles from when the light comes on.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 ford focus SE. I am having problems

In my opinion it sounds like a problem from inside the fuel tank but don't quote me on this. With multiple sensors and switches related to fuel movement throughout the vehicle you're truly better off having a professional deal with this, unfortunately it will cost a few dollars.

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Focus low fuel light will not turn off

nope not a fuse prob.. most likely the fuel pump itself. there is a small chance it could be in the wiring back to the pump also but the pump is most likely the prob.

SOURCE: 2003 ford focus replaced brake switch lights will ...

I have the same problem with my 03 Focus hatchback! Someone stoppedme yesterday to tell me that they looked like they were always on when i was driving but when i was in "Park" they worked... This particular driver was also driving a focus hatchback and asked me if my Cruise Control was working.. It actually was not and he told me the same thing happened with his focus. He said it was a wire attached to the back brake lights that had broken. I have not yet gotten it fixed. has anyone else had this problem?

have the check engine light checked at a parts store its usuall free. I would bet its the idle air control motor. This controls the fuel air mixture at idle

An error code of 0457 came up. any idea what that is?

P0457 FORD - EVAP Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Filler Cap Loose/Off)
EVAP control system has a very large leak such as fuel filler cap fell off, EVAP control system does not operate properly.

Vehicles that meet enhanced evaporative requirements utilize a vacuum-based evaporative system integrity check. The evap system integrity check uses a Fuel Tank Pressure Transducer (FTPT), a Canister Vent Solenoid (CVS) and Fuel Level Input (FLI) along with the Vapor Management Valve (VMV) or Electric Vapor Management Valve (EVMV) to find 0.040" diameter or larger evap system leaks. Federal vehicles can utilize a 0.040" leak check rather than the 0.020" leak check required for California vehicles (click over pic for zoom).

zjlimited_296.gif

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Possible a noticeable fuel odor caused by the release of fuel vapors

Possible causes:
- Missing fuel filler cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap

Possible solution:
- Retight or replaced fuel tank filler cap

Tech notes:
It is a very common problem with Ford vehicles. There are service bulletins for the following vehciles:
1997-2000 Ford CONTOUR
1997-2002 Ford ESCORT
1997-2003 Ford CROWN VICTORIA, MUSTANG, TAURUS
1998-2003 Ford ESCORT ZX2
2000-2003 Ford FOCUS
2002-2003 Ford THUNDERBIRD
1997 F-250 Ford HD
1997-1999 Ford Ford F-250 LD
1997-2003 Ford E SERIES, EXPEDITION, EXPLORER, F-150, RANGER, WINDSTAR
1999-2003 Ford F SUPER DUTY
2000-2003 Ford EXCURSION
2001-2003 Ford ESCAPE, EXPLORER SPORT TRAC, EXPLORER SPORT

Also, in this link could check this Ford Bulletin.

Hope helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).

Does overdrive effect the gas usage in a 2003 Ford Focus

Yes. Overdrive helps get better milage in all vehicles. It is simply put, just an extra gear. When you go through 1st, then 2nd, 3rd, then OD (in automatic - 5th gear in manual)

All it does is allow the engine to run at lower speed while maintaining crusing speed. It does not have a lot of power, it's notsupposed to. It is to save fuel at higher speeds, particularly over distance travel..

In city driving it can slow the changing of gears. Better to turn it off for more low speed control.

I have a 2000 ford focus se it want stay runnig unless you hold the gas pedal down as soon as you let the gas go it stops running i changed the fuel filter did not help

first of all, if light is on have it scanned for a problem code. if no scanner all auto parts stores will scan for free. there has been over 200 recalls for 2000 ford focus, check with ford to see if this is one of the problems. god bless, this is a long run, but check and see if fuel is getting to fuel pressure regulator.

I have trouble code P0171 on a ford focus 2003 2.0 SHOC . what does that mean? Can I fix this problem on my own?

it's a oxy sensor code for lean fuel misture. try cleaning sensor first. change fuel filter and add a can of SEAFOAM to tank of PREMIUM gas. *** SEAFOAM 3-5000 miles, andd it should take care of this ethanol gas problem. I hate ethanol gas,

Oxygen sensors do go bad, but having the code there doesn't necessarily mean a bad sensor.

In your case P2195 means your front oxygen sensor (on the exhaust manifold) read a lean mixture for more than 25 seconds on 2 consecutive drive cycles (2 times you turned your engine on, then off).

Ford does have a service bulletin out for that code and the code usually indicates you have a vacuum leak somewhere around the engine.

If your car drives well, I wouldn't worry about it right now. It's not a condition that will leave you stranded in any way, the worst that can happen is decreased fuel mileage.

I'd run the car for a while and see if the light comes back on, and if it does, how often. It may never light up again. If it does light up, and/or if you notice any increased fuel consumption, erratic idle (engine feels like it wants to stall at idle), or any other driveability issue, i'd start by looking for a vacuum leak before anything else...

Other possible causes could be
-Bad Oxygen sensor (possible, but i wouldn't jump to this)
-Bad injector(s) (unlikely, you'd probably notice in the way the engine runs)
-Fuel pressure issues (you'd notice this too)
-Bad engine computer (very unlikely)

A vacuum leak can a lot of times be pin pointed easily:
Start the engine and let it idle. Get a propane torch (the kind used to solder plumbing pipes) and open the gas valve slightly (without lighting the torch). Pass the torch around vacuum lines and connections (they run from the intake/throttle body to the transmission, brake booster, PCV valve etc...) When the torch comes around where the leak is, the engine speed will increase noticeably.

There are pumps available to check for this but I find this method to be quite easier, cheaper and more reliable.

Ford Focus Engine Light

Start by getting either a mechanic or someone with an OBDII scanner to read the code so you know where to start. Lots of time a loose gas cap will cause a "Evap system small leak" code which illuminates the check engine light for a while. Other than that I can't help you much without knowing what code comes up.
