Sounds like a solenoid or two in the transmission is dirty or defective. Needs a transmission rebuild to rectify it, or a replacement transmission that has lower miles or a newer transmission that doesn't have this problem.
One can try a transmission flush and refill, which costs about $100 or so, but that may not fix the problem. A rebuild is much more expensive, but is the way to go if you plan on keeping the vehicle for years to come.
