Question about 2002 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

My 2002 Camry (4 cylinder) misfires once engine is hot - after 15-25 miles driving. Checked 4+ days in detail & serviced 2 times by Toyota Dealer - throttle block cleaned, gas filters cleaned, injectors checked and rotated, new spark plugs, !00+ miles of test drives, hours on computers in shop and while driving. Very bad misfire between 60 and 70 mph. I notice when accelerating from 70 to 80+ no misfire. Correlates , roughly , with air and engine temp - runs well when cool. Bucks like a wild horse when hot. Toyota dealer, who went out of their way to help with great service techs, and I are both mystified.

Thanks for tips. Interesting thing is that even with car bucking (when really hot) like a wild horse there is no register/record in computer memory our real time output..We have had cool days and rain in San Diego , but no deluges that might soak the coils. A private dealer did suggest trying a new spark coil which we did - little or no difference.

Hi

Did the dealer check the crakshaft sensor? it sounds like the timing is shifting causing the misfire.
the heat can cause intermitent faults maybe not long enough for the computer to register the fault with a code.

And as a possiblity the coil pack may be arking out somewhere, has this ever got wet? or cold recently?
Regards

Dan

    Hi

After thought here, is there any holes in the air system as to where it might be taking in too much air, or possibly a vacuum pipe that is blocked up. lastly the ECM could be faulty and therefore you would struggle to get a code.
    Hope this helps
    Regards

Hi, my first recommendation would be to take the plugs out and visually inspect each one and check to make sure they are properly gapped, if they look fouled at all i would replace them without hesitation. try throwing a set of NGK plugs in the car to fix the misfires. other than that you may want to look at the wires. good luck joe

the po303 and p0305 codes are indicating a cylinder 3 & 5 MISFIRE respectively. the other codes are for o2 sensor and fuel trim. the misfire codes should be fixed first and then worry about the others if they still exist. if the vehicle has direct ignition or coil on plug, this is a good place to start, the ignition coils for those cylinders. a scanner with a misfire monitor would really help to narrow done the problem and as always a tune-up never hurts if it hasn't been done for some time or plugs, air filter, etc, show signs of deterioration. the misfire codes if left untreated will release raw hydrocarbon emissions into the environment not to mention the damage it could cause to your catalytic converter due to overheating. also your gas mileage will suffer. hope this will help yoy
