Does it have a gear or a reluctor wheel. if it has a wheel you will have to take the sleeve off first and be careful they bend easy. then you can drive it off with a brass drift, again be careful because they crack. gm has a special tool to removed and install these parts. hayden trans tool may also have one. you should measure the distance from the end of the output shaft ro the rear edge of the wheel this will be your assembly height.then put your yoke seal sleeve tube back on and your done.

How can I loosen jammed/stuck speedometer gear in its housing?

Hello Dan,

The speedo drive has an o ring seal. The actual tolerances should not seize the unit in the case. You mentioned you "cut the cable". Is it ruined? Relieve any gear binding by placing the tranny in 1st gear and gently rock the car back and forth while pulling up and twisting on the cable. You may also want to gently tap the top of the drive gear with a brass drift first...carefully...light taps should help to unseat the parts.

How to disconnect speedometer cable from transmission on 1990 ford f150?

unscrew the cable from the transmission. if you can`t unscrew it,unbolt the lock bolt that holds the little bar which keeps the speedometer cable in place and remove the speedometer driven gear assembly from the transmission. the gear is plastic and is what the cable is driven by.

The speedometer dows not work: however the cable is in perfect working order.

you say the cable is in working order do you mean the outer cable is in good shape or have you pulled the inner cable out to inspect for frayed, twisted,or broken cable,if the inner cable is in good shape and no defects then with the cable in place but not connected to the speedometer head drive the car a little to have someone check to make sure the cable is turning as the vehicle is moving .if not then you may have a bad/damaged speedometer drive gear in the transmission, this is located were the cable attaches to the transmission.remove cable then remove the gear drive assembly from the side of the transmission(be sure the gear comes out with it)inspect the the plastic gear for any damage, inspect the gear inside the transmission that the gear is driven off of,turn the drive shaft making sure the gear turns and there is no damage to the gear as you are turning the drive shaft.if this is all okay then i would say that the speedometer head has a problem and needs to be replaced.

Speedometer works and stops working intermittently. I don't know how to unplug to clean the contacts

This vehicle 1990 does not have a digital speedometer correct.?
The cable runs from the output shaft of the transmission to the rear of the speedometer.
Therefore either the cable is defective ,speedometer itself or the gear it works off of in the transmission.
This could be fustrating especially if you determine its the gear on the outputshaft.( have to remove transmission from vehicle to repair it) Take the vehicle to transmission shop they do this in there

Just bought a 65 mustang coupe. the speedometer doesn't work. the fuel gauge and the other components work on it, but can't figure out why the speedometer doesn't work. i've unsrewed and taken out the...

Remove the speedometer cable and manually turn the cable inside the covering. If the cable turns then the problem is in the transmission. There is a small gear where the cable connects inside the transmission that wears out. Once it does you lose the speedometer. Have this gear replaced or replace it yourself and it should resolve your problem.

there is a clamp that either needs to be removed (10mm bolt holds it on) or on some transmisions it's an O-Ring that allows you to remove the speedo gear.

remove the speedo gear and bring it to the parts store so they can match up the identical amount of teeth so that the new one will not make your speedo run fast or slow. The gears are color coded however i have seen many instances where aftermarket ones have thier own color scheme and the convert charts are inaccurate so count the teeth
