Question about 1999 Buick Regal

1999 Regal GS Super charged, Starts,runs 3-5 sec and dies

I have a 1999 Regal GS Super Charged, ~74K. Car starts runs 3-5 seconds and dies. If I work the gas pedal can keep it running by reving the engine as soon as I back off the pedal it dies. Hooked up a fuel guage to the fuel rail. Turn key pressure jumps to 48 psi, start the car and pressure drops to almost zero then car dies. As soon as the car dies, pressure jumps again to 48 psi. Fuel filter was changed 1 month ago. Looking for troubleshooting assistance.

    the car would start but then die right after i took my foot off the gas. but it only does it once in a while and stops if you keep your foot on the gas pedal for several minutes.

    i have a 96 3/4 ton 4x4 all of a sudden the engine revved high and the died like is was starving for gas. have not checked fuel pressure yet. engine will start but will rev high and then die like it is starrving for gas

    i will be driving and i lose pressure on the accelerator. my car will still be running but my gas pedal no longer works. if i go into neutral for a few seconds it will work properly for a few minutes before the process repeats.

I gaurantee that it is the fuel pump ressistor up on the passenger side front behind head lamp assembly you will find the connector with two wires going to it. no need to remove old one install new one and connect wires to new one leave old in. dealer only part but not expensive. dont belive dealer when they try to talk you out of it. This is a kit to relocate a ressistor that has been installed in a poor location. I promise this will fix it. My wifes car did the same thing, took 20 minutes to fix and that is only because i am an electrician and am finicky about where to locate wires etc. the kit comes with installation instructions however they are a little vague. trust me. easy fix. my dealer tried to get me to leave car for repair and said it sounds like the theft detterent system. they were wrong and i was right. dont trust em

1997 buick regal gs supercharge starts then shuts off what could be the problem


First thing I would need to know is if you are loosing spark or fuel pressure when the engine stops.
If it is fuel, it could be the engine oil pressure switch. The fuel pump gets power from the pump relay in crank mode, then from the oil pressure switch once the engine starts.

I have a 99 Buick Regal GS, engine will start and run for few seconds then it will die.


I had a similar problem....my 98 regal GS did the same. There is a two stage fuel pump resistor located in the right inner finder. It was corroded and open. The fix requires relocating new resister on firewall. Fix was $165.00 + tax to my mechanic and runs like new now. Hard to diagnose problem per mechanic.

1997 buick regal gs starts but wont stay running. it will start every time but will only stay running for 3-6 seconds.it was running fine then went out to use it 1 day and this problem ,any suggestions...


Your fuel pump ballast resistor is bad if it's a super charged engine. you will find it behind the battery other side of the wall kind of hard to find. it's a large white ceramic rectangle this takes the load from the fuel pump allowing it to run.

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.

1999 Grand Prix STP Super charged will not run for then 30 secs.


I can almost guarantee it’s not anything to do with his "turbo" or a vacuum leak.

Since I believe this person has GTP, which is supercharged, he is having an issue with his fuel pump resistor. See, GM put a resistor on the fuel pump to make it run at a slowly or faster when the car is pushing boost. I guess their idea was something about fuel econ.

But, when this fails to work the car will die after about 5-10 seconds of running. So there is an easy way to diagnose this problem.

Locate your fuse block under your hood; it’s on the pass side by the battery.
Open the box and find relay #15. Pull out the relay in the attached picture and bend the pin out, reseat the relay and start your car. If your car runs like a champ, you know what the problem was.

And yes, you can run it like this, but I wouldn’t.

the theromostate will not couse the motor to stall it sounds like to me that the fuel pump could be going bad or the injectors could be dirty
