Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

1 Answer

Poor idle on my 2000 grand am gt

My car idles fine from a cold start, but as soon as the engine warms up the it bounces like crazy between 0 and 1000 rpm's and eventually bogs out and stalls like its running too rich? could it be an O2 sensor messing up the fuel mixture? I had it put on a scanner by a mechanic that i know and i got P0446, P0449 both emission codes, i changed out the mass air flow and that didnt work either. Someone help me fix this issue! Thank you!

You are positive that it could be one of these two issues? If it is then i thank you very much for your response! I will try this.

Idle has been fluctuating from 2800+ to a stall condition. Replaced the IACV but condition still exists. Mass flow sensor, O2 Sensor< not sure of next step

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.

You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

Why don't you get your ride check for engine error code? Getting the error code resolves almost every problem. Please update your answer with the error code you are getting (if any).

94 jeep grand cherokee. starts, idle. throw warmup. as soon as I touch the excellerator let up the rpm drop & engine stalls.

Most low idle speed problems on these engines are due to a faulty idle air control valve but since you state the idle will go up and return to idle then i would say it is working properly i think you have a throttle body coking problem ( dirt and grit accumulates around the butterfly valve in the throttlebody ) to fix this simply remove the fresh air hose from the throttlebody and open the throttle all the way up use a clen rag and wipe clean you may use a solvent such as B12 on the rag but dont use too much 1_4_2013_4_54_06_am.jpg

When i start it it starts fine but if it is cold it will not idle i have to keep pushing gas pedal

remove and clean idle air control ( IAC ). this is what controls idling of engine, evedently the iac must be stuck. if the engine is cold and the iac is working properly, then it should go up to about 12 or 13 hundred rpms then gradually slow down to proper idle. my 2000 malibu 3.1 idles at 650 rpms when warm.

The engine sputters and dies when it heats up. Is this Vapor lock? On cold start it works great and idles just fine but as it heats, the engine starts choking and soon dies out. If this is vapor lock, how...

sounds like the reason it starts and idles fine at start up is your choke is functioning... as your vehicle warms up.. the choke starts to kick off... Inspect your throttle body and idle control motor.

2000 grand am 2.4liter fast idle when started then low idle when warm

Try cleaning your throttle body, paying attention to your Idle air control (IAC) valve. Your IAC sounds like it's gummed up with carbon and it'f it's to far gone to be cleaned, replace it. You can use throttle body cleaner or what best works is Deep Creep from Seafoam and would not hurt also to give you engine Seafoam treatment.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck. http://www.seafoamsales.com/
