On valve cover, there are 8 or more screws, maybe one or two connect to small part to hold either hose or others, remove those screws around the cover, the cover will loss.

When you change the gasket, you have to clean both cover and head surface, make sure it is completely clean, then use grease instead of glue, it is much better, when you tight it, do not make too tight, it will break the gasket but also not too loss, it will leak again, you have to do just right.
Hope this can help you, if you have other question, post it, I will help you.

take off the spark plugs first. when you change the gas ket, be careful, After you clean both side, you have to stable the gas ket and rubber sills first and slowly put the cover back.

if you have more question, please ask me, I will follow you to the end.

Usually change the valve cover, check the cover see the connections, step by step release them all, if you can not remember , please write it down, when you take off the spark plug, check the first one carefully, spark plug with washer, probably you have to use 9/16 or 1/2 socket tool to open it, because this is the first time you take off the spark plug, you must use the right socket and make it completely stright and tight then turn count clock wise, sometimes because the spark plug is too tight due to engine heat and you used the car for a while, you have to hold the socket stright and tight, and hit the wrench and let it loss quickly first. DO NOT USE WRONG SIZE SOCKET AND DAMAGE THE SPARK PLUG, THEN YOU WILL HAVE A BIG HEADACHE.TO TAKE THE PLUG OUT. TRUST ME!!! In my own Union 76 Service Station, a couple of customers damaged their spark plug and drove to my station asked us to help, we have to use special way and special tools to take it out. when you take out the plug, be sure to check the plug see if there is some oil, sometimes it is leaking from there, because there probably a rubber sill inside, any way, if you want to try to save you some money and also you can learn some thing which is useful for your life,

If you want to learn, I like to help. YOU MUST

    1. GO TO AUTO PARTS SHORE,GET THE RIGHT PARTS FIRST.YOU MUST GIVE THEM THE RIGHT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CAR, SUCH AS YEAR, MODEL, 4 CYLINDERS AUTOMATIC TRANS, OR ATAKE,ETC.

    2. WRITE TO ME AND TELL ME WHAT YOU GOT BEFORE YOU START TO CHANGE THE GAS KET.

My english is not perfect, but I think you can understand.

How do I know if my rubber gasket under my valve covers need to be replaced ?

Only needs replacing if it is leaking oil. Check carefully all around the valve cover. If you see no leaks or oil seeps, the gasket is good.

Possible leak from my rear main seal on 87 bronco 2

The valve cover gaskets are prone to leaks and bad ones at that. Cleans the entire engine and rive it to confirm the source of the leaks or leaks.. Remember the oil runs down hill and to the rear of the engine and gets all over from leaking valve cover gaskets.

I pulled a spark plug to change plugs and the spark plug wire boot was all wet from oil. The other three plugs were fine. The rest of the engine looked fine apart from the regular dirty engine look. No oil...

yes, the valve cover gasket is the only thing that can cause this, and yes, you have to remove the cover and put a new gasket in to fix. Please let me know if you have more questions.

I was told there are two oil pans on Mazda Tribute 2001 (upper & lower) 4 cylinder manual. I have an oil leak do I replace both?

There are two gaskets, one is between the lower pan and the upper pan, and the second is between the upper pan and the engine. You only need to replace the gasket that leaks. If both are leaking, replace them both. To find out where the leaks are, raise the car, get underneath, and look closely all around the oil pans to see where the oil is coming from. Use a flashlight if necessary. You should be able to trace any leaking oil upward to its source.

The oil pan gaskets are not necessarily the only sources of oil leaks. Check to see if any oil is coming from behind the timing cover, and look for oil coming from the valve cover gasket.

Leaks oil looks like from valve cover

You have to remove the spark plugs cables and remove the four nuts that you see when the cables are removed.

When the four nuts are removed, simply raise the valuve cover. When replacing the gasket, make sure you get the gromets as well. Those sometimes get worn or crack since they are more exposed than the value cover gasket. Make sure that you clean the cover from oil and replace the gasket with no use of silicon.

Good Luck.
