Troubleshooting the Brakes on 96 Suburban

OK so here whats happening. I was coming home from camp and about halfway thru the trip the brake pedal got very soft and i had to push it almost all the way to the floor to get the brakes to start working and the emergency brake indicator light come on and has stayed on ever since. When i got home i shut off the veh and pulled the negative cable to drain the juice out of the veh and reset the ECU. When i attempt to step on the brake when the veh is not running it is very responsive but when the veh is running it is not. I checked the fluid to see if there was a leak and the fluid level is perfect. I can get the brakes to lock up once the veh slows to about 10-20 Kms per hour. I am thinking air in the line? any suggestions would be helpful.

I bought the 96 suburban used. The guy who first owned it said he replaced the master cylinder to try and fix the soft pedal. I have bled the lines many times. I also took it to the dealer and they did the pressure bleed to get all the air out. The pedal still feels soft. The dealer says the brakes operate to specs.

    Please help.

Thanks for the advise - turns out there was a hole in one the lines that was not noticible until it got worse. I replaced the line and all is well. Brake booster is working perfectly.

thanks

Changed the rear end of 1989 Suburban (4 wheel drive). Put on new brake lines for the rear brakes. The brake pedal is hard. There is no brake fluid going to the rear brakes and the front brakes seem to...

It has to be your proportioning valve, and it is probably jammed and blocking flow to the rear. You can either replace the valve or try to reset it. To reset, you need a way to put pressure into the rear brake exit port. If the valve has bleeder screws on it, try opening the front bleeder and pumping the pedal. If there is no bleeder on the valve, I have also heard of people opening the front caliper bleeders and pumping the brake to see if a little pressure in the rear will slide the piston open. No harm in trying these ideas before buying a new one, eh.

96 suburban brake ligh don't work

you may have to change the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal stop by your local GM dealership in the parts department and they be able to print you off pictures and diagrams but check on the part at your local part store because it maybe cheaper wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

96 Taurus brakes

Presuming you have NO leaks in the hydraulic system,it would be a bad brake master cylinder. What's happening is,the piston inside the master cylinder has rubber seals, and when the pedal goes to the floor, the master cylinder is leaking internally, past the rubber seals. If the brake booster was bad,the symptom would be an extrememly HARD,unresponsive, brake pedal, and the engine would idle terrible (vacuum leak).Good luck.
