The starter won't crank. If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the "Start" position, it means that the starter motor doesn't turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a dead battery; here is How to check the battery. ... The starter motor itself or a starter solenoid could be bad.13 Aug 2013

Have a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche it won't start we replaced alternator and had battery tested. The lights everything works just won't start

You have to be sure the battery has a full charge, if the battery is down, you can't do any testing. Use a digital multimeter across battery posts everything off, the generic spec for a full charge is around 12.6 volts, if it needs charging, get it charged.
Test the charging system? Even if the generator is new, if a problem on the wiring circuit, it may not work.

If starter motor won't even crank have to check starter motor wiring circuits. When testing make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking is set. Safety is your responsibility.
If it cranks good but won't start, check spark--fuel--compression. What about your security system?

I have a 2008 Dodge avenger,2.7 litre and battery is strong everything works except it won't turn over, what can you suggest?

You can try tapping on the starter motor with a blunt object while some one holds the key in the crank position. If it turns over during this procedure, starter replacement will be required. If nothing happens during this procedure, you will need to check the small "start" wire attached to the starter for power while the key is held in the crank position. If there is power and the starter motor is inoperative, the starter is defective. If no power, possible relay/wiring to starter motor

1999 vw passat turbo wont crank or turn lights on

- Switch on the head lamps for 5 minutes.
- Keeping the head lamps ON, start the engine.
If the lights die,
- Check the battery terminals.
- Check battery state of charge.
- Charging system.
If the lights still glow sharply,
- Check fuses and relays in under the hood fuse and relay box junction.
- Battery to starter motor cable.
- Battery to engine ground and chassis ground cable.
- Solenoid on starter motor.
- Starter motor.
- Wiring.
-Ignition switch.

If your valve body is stuck open or closed, would that cause your car to not turn over???

If no movement of the engine happens at all, then please check the following:

1) Battery voltage. You should have 12.5 volts and over. Try turning on the headlights and cranking. If they dim considerably, then your battery is likely flat and may need charging/replacing.

2) Battery voltage is fine, but nothing happens: Is there a clicking when you turn the key? If so, then check the starter motor. It's likely failed.

3) Battery voltage is fine, but there is no clicking when I turn the key. Check voltage to the starter motor solenoid on the top of the motor. If it is receiving power when you turn the key to crank, yet not moving/engaging, then replace it.

4) Battery is fine, but no power to starter motor and/or solenoid. Check all battery connections, leads and connections to the motor and engine body.

99 sable won't start, replaced battery, starter, alternator, but still wont even crank. code reader also said map sensor so it was reset worked for alittle but now nothing

If the car does not have a security system, I would check for voltage at the starter from the battery and from the key switch.
The power from the key switch goes thru the neutral safety switch before getting to the starter.

1999 audi a6 wont crank sometimes

Either there is a bad or dirty battery connection which is allowing the lights but no crank or you could have dirty or loose starter wires or starter relay may be bad or ignition is a possibility. All these can be tested with an ohmmeter for power. I would start with connections

Car doesnt want to start. all lights come on when in the on position however when I turn it to start nothing happens it dont even try to turn over it just clicks 2002 hyundai xg350

The starting system consists of:
  • starter motor
  • starter switch, part of the ignition switch
  • starter motor solenoid relay switch
  • starter solenoid
  • starter drive
When you turn your key to start your engine, it just clicks, right? If so, more than likely this is due to a bad battery. Even though your battery may appear to be fully charged, it may have a dead cell, or worse. If you get a jump, does the vehicle start? If so, replace your battery.

Possible sources of the problem if the engine does not crank or the relay clicks:
  1. Battery
  2. Starter motor
  3. Starter motor relay
  4. Ignition switch
  5. Damaged fuse
  6. Anti-theft system
  7. Circuitry

I have replaced the battery and my jeep still will not start. Do I need to do something else

When you say it doesnt start what do you mean? does the engine crank over but wont start, or is it that when you turn the key nothing happens,i will assume it does nothing when the key is turned just due to the fact you replaced the battery, the next step is to check for power at the starter, have someone turn the key to start and hold it there while you check for power at the small connection at the starter, the starter has two connections, one has power at all times and the other a small connection gets power when the key is in the crank (start) position, if theres power at the starter then you have a bad starter, if theres no power then you may have a bad key chip or a bad neutral safty swith, now if the truck is spinning over but not starting then the first common thing i would check is for fuel preasure at the injector rail, good luck hope this helps.
