your 2002 Ford Explorer XLS is only going forward in 3rd gear and not reversing, it could be caused by several issues. Here are a few possible causes:
Transmission control module (TCM): The TCM controls the shift patterns for the transmission, and if it is not functioning properly, it could cause the transmission to become stuck in 3rd gear.
Shift solenoids: The shift solenoids control the flow of fluid to the transmission, and if one or more of them are not functioning properly, it could cause the transmission to become stuck in 3rd gear.
Valve body: The valve body controls the flow of fluid to the transmission, and if it is clogged or malfunctioning, it could cause the transmission to become stuck in 3rd gear.
Linkage: The linkage connects the shifter to the transmission, and if it is loose or damaged, it could cause the transmission to become stuck in 3rd gear.
Automatic transmission filter and fluid: If the filter is clogged or the fluid is dirty or low, it could cause the transmission to become stuck in 3rd gear.
It's important to keep in mind that these are just a few possible causes and that there may be other issues that are preventing your Ford Explorer from going into reverse. It's best to take it to a qualified transmission specialist if you're unable to diagnose the issue.
It's also important to note that some of these steps require a certain level of mechanical knowledge and experience. If you're not comfortable with checking these items, it's best to consult a professional mechanic.if i was able to help my cashapp $ralphpapi thank you have a blessing day
as far as the hold goes This is a performance shift mode for the automatic transmission. It prevents the transmission from shifting into the highest gear. There should be a button near or on the shift lever marked "hold". It was probably pushed accidentally. The check engine is a separate issue, but usually most part stores like Auto Zone can scan it for you for free and tell you what the most likely fix would be
SOUND LIKE BAD TRANSMISSION YOU CAN CHECK THE TRANS PAN FOR METAL SHAVINGS TO MAKE SURE YOU NEED A REBUILD. ALSO CHE YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID SEE IF ITS RED OR BROWN BROWN MEANS USUALLY TRANSMISSION IS BURN OUT
CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL FIRST.MAKE SURE ITS NOT LOW IF ALL IS GOOD YOU HAVE INTERNAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEM LIKE DAMAGE PLANETARY CARRIER ASSEMBLY.
Check you transmission fluid level and if it's not your transmission, I'm thinking that your brake shoe lineing in the rear brakes may have separated and is jamming up aginst the drums when your trying to back up. Sorry can't halp you with any more, good luck and start with that and hope it help's.
You may need new motor mounts...if they are worn out this would allow additonal vibration from the engine to transfer to the vehicle body & doors . If it is 4WD then also check underneath for the center driveshaft mount. Higher mileage cars tend to have the mounts lose there ability to dampen engine movement upon engagement.
Any shop should be able to push on the brake and engage the transmission in drive or reverse and watch the whole vibration event happen.
Then it becomes a determination of which mounts to replace.
