Question about 1996 Geo Prizm

1 Answer

My wife's car is a 2001 Opel Corsa with automatic and manual gear change.Recently when in automatic the gear slips out and there is no drive and the engine just revs but when the shift is moved to manual drive is then restored and once in motion automatic is re-engaged and drive continues for a while until the same occurs. The kickdown is slow and when trying to accelerate quickly the drive is sluggish to the point it nearly stops.Has anybody any ideas as to what the problem is before I take this to an Opel garage. Havent a clue here to be honest all i can say is to check the oil level ,opel sound expensive to me ,they always make a mountain out of a molehill with their bills so it may pay to trade it in quick as even asking for an estimate they charge ,i mean their dealers and whos paying for the gelled haired sales staff and the everything else ?? know what i mean ,I have worked on these semi autos and they are a nightmare as all the software is encrypted so its a dealer only scenario to diagnose ,Could be the front clutch is wearing out which if it is then its a recon box because unlike america you cannot buy parts for the interior of the box only an exchange unit is sold 2500€ ,been their teashirt job i fitted a manual box in the end from a earlier corsa and done a magnificiant bodge job ,till it went for its annual test and as the papers said auto it had to be an auto unless it was done by an authorised opel dealer with a certificate from a technical engineer ,well the paperwork from the technical engineer alone was more than the car was worth so the owner drove it back to the uk ,re-registered it their and brought it back on english plates ,it was driven around like this here in spain for some 5/6 yrs till owner died ,havent seen this car since .

What is the oil capacity of an Opel Corsa 1.7 DTI utility manual gearbox and what grade oil should be used

As a standard, any front wheel drive car uses ATF lubricant or better known as Automatic Transmission Fluid to lubricate it's gearbox, you can recognise it by its colour witch is deep red, an opel/vauxhall corsa/astra 1.7d/1.7di/1.7dti/1.7cdti uses ATF II, not a easy trans to fill, suggest you let a dealer do this service

Opel corsa problems

now! no doubt you fuel up at Tesco's, whether your car is petrol or diesel your injectors will be clogging, get some injector cleaner, put that in your tank run your car for a good few miles, I mean a lot, I had same problem in my Jaguar just recently, a couple of bottles of jet cleaner in with fuel when I went to fuel up, 1 week later smooth as a baby's.

I hope this solves your problem, it the cheapest way to start diagnosing.
