You are probably having problem with your Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). It can rev your motor up to the point where you are driving down the road at 40-50 MPH with out touching the gas pedal. Fortunately, unlike that other brand, you can use your brakes to slow back down. If the new part is too expensive($435 on the 2003 Lancer) you should be able pick a good one up at the salvage yard cheap. The IACV for most cars new sells for $25 to $50.
Turn on the key and listen by the fuel tank for the fuel pump to hum. A common problem is low fuel pressure. It will build pressure when the key is turned, use that fuel, and then the pressure drops. Kind of like when you're using a squirt gun that's getting empty.
make sure it not time to replace the fuel filter you can do this put in some STP gas treatment if the car runs better replace the fuel filter and the sparkplugs also give these websites atry www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com if all fails stop by your local library and get your hands on a Haynes auto repair manual for your car make sure you have a half of tank of gas and add a little more when you put the gas treatment in and drive on a back roard where you can drive around 55-mph wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.
the alternator may of went bad and stopped charging so the car died when the battery went dead. Charge the battery and test to start with. Are you saying wont turn over ot turns over and wont start. If it turns over and wont start then it could be several things. Will need to get it diagnosed to be sure
