Your problem could very well be a brake switch sensor that's why they stopped working whenever you press the brakes the little plastic sensor button supposed to press down and allow the voltage to reach the tail lights to allow normal operation
the brakes got this device on it called limiter its a notification that it time for new brakes, rotors mite need turns or rotors need replacement, do not wait to long, you begin brake failure, parking brake maybe sticking while you are still driving.
do the simple test
start the car and see if it idles normally-- foot off the brake--if so good
now put your foot on the brake -does the engine stop-- if so then replace the brake booster as it has a vacuum leak
you may not notice the difference as most people sit at lights with their foot on the brake so all they understand is that the engine stops at lights.
check that the brake booster is not leaking vacuum when you have your foot on the brakes and upsetting the air /fuel mixture at idle. When coming to a stop use the hand brake to stop the car and if it keeps idling ok then it will be the booster.
You probably damaged the wire harness leading to the back of the car. I'm pretty sure it runs down the drivers side of the body/ frame under the car & into the trunk. Just look for damaged wires.

Bolt the new stop light switch to the bracket with the socket set. Plug the brake light wiring harness into the Ford pickup's new stop light switch by hand.
Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop positionagainst the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.
It's stalling at lights because of no brake lights. Meaning the brake light switch and transmission power to shut off the overdrive is not working. Any time you touch the brake, overdrive is turned off because power to trans is stopped when brake lights come on. Both these operations are performed by the same switch under the dash and mounted so that when the brake pedal is depressed, the switch button comes out and turns on the brake lights in turn shutting down the overdrive. Adjust or replace that brake light switch and you're good to go.
