Question about 1988 Chevrolet K2500

1 Answer

Front wheels will not engage on my 350 Automatic 1988 chevy 4X4 CK2500 silverado. I have had an intermittent problem in the past but it eventually would work. Now there are no indicator lights on the transfer case shifter and it will not lock in the front wheels. I changed out the thermal actuator on front Axle and cleaned all connections at the front axle plugs but the 4X4 still will not lock in. What else could be causing the problem? I heard maybe a faulty T-switch? where is this t- switch located on the transfer case? Also where is the 4x4 fuse located and could this be an issue with contacts in the transfer case shifter lever itself?

Well new developments..Thank you for the fuse info. I haven't done much to the truck since I backed it back into the barn 2 weeks ago. I was pulling fuses to check them and now the truck won't Run. Turns over and has spark..will fire and run with either or pouring gas into the throttle body..so what caused the fuel injectors to just quit working? All the fuses looked fine. Which fuse controls the fuel injectors? The fuel pump also runs fine. This engine problem was not an issue before I pulled the fuses and checked them. As far as the front axil , after the ice and snow melted off the barn floor I noticed the front left tire had dragged when I backed into barn so I think the front wheel on pass side is bound up....either because of the brake or the axil ... maybe thats whats causing my 4X4 issue- but the indicator in the transfer case shifter doesn't light up anymore. Its been to cold to go out and mess with it (10 degrees)but when I get a chance I'll take the plow off and drag the truck up to my garage where Iv'e got some heat and all my tools are handy. This is a yard plow truck and sits most of the time. It was running like **** earlier in Nov So put in a new computer ( it cleared out the service engine soon light that had been on for years) and I changed the rotted out air management valve. It did run better until this 4X4 issue. Now its totally porked. I 'll listen to any and all suggestions....Damn cold (and slow) clearing snow with a tractor!

On that truck your fuse for the instrument panel is the same for that actuator.

Possibly a front driveshaft problem. You may have eather bad splines in the yoke or a bad universal joint in the front drive shaft.

Hi...your problem might be coming from your front wheel bearing hubs. They are know to cause this problem as they wear out and eventually have to be replaced.

4x4 doesnt work

I have a 1988 chevy 4x4 that hat the same problem. It was the 4wheel drive switch(works like a selenoid) and screws into the front differential. I was told they go out often although I have only replaced one. This is a picture of it. It can be purchased at most any auto-parts store. Hope this helps. Larry

Change engine in different engine/350 fuel injection, try to find gas line to attach to switch with two tanks lines.

What you have is commonly known as a "dually" (because it has dual rear wheels) Essentially the truck is identical to others of that year except for the rear differential which has "floating" axles (likely a Dana unit). The best manual would be the original chevy shop manual...Otherwise try and find a chilton or motors manual for that year.
I don't quite understand what your question heading means...Are you considering swapping the engine?

I have a 98 Chevy Silverado, 5.7, 4X4. The 4X4 will engage but it

Can you pinpoint where the clicking is comming from, is it from the tranfer case , front differancial, front hubs? From your discription, it sounds like something maybe is not engaging all the way, Have you checked any of the U joints on the front drive shaft?

1999 Chevy 4x4 engaging

Check the solenoid at the front axel. This is a rather common prob. First check that power is at the axel, got power, clean and put it back. Please do not even look at the tranfer case! At worst you may need to replace the axel solenoid! Frankster016
