Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1999 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4

While on holidays traveling in the truck, and as I was passing other vehicles on cruise I used the signal light to change lanes. Then it happened, the clicking sound, the same you hear as if the signal light was still on but no turn signal on dash or outside the vehicle was flashing. We drove like that for the rest of the trip as it happened on the weekend and finding a service center was next to impossible. When we arrived home the security station on the dash board has of now started to flash and stays on when the truck is stilling still and not running and locked up but not when we were on holidays. Any idea as to what this is before I take it to the service center? Ron

    Hello Ron,

Wow, having the same problem with my 1999 silverado. While on holidays, as we are driving down the road it sounds like the signal relay is on, a continuous click. When this sound is occuring the signal lights are not on and the signal do work correctly. Having been a mechanic in my previous life, I have been able to narrow the problem down to either the signal light switch or the wiring in the column. It seems to do it when I either tilt the steering wheel, barily touch the signal light lever. I removed the bottom cover on the steering column and if I even so lightly touch the sleft side of the signal light switch it will cause it to do it every time. I am thinking it is the signal light lever as the connection in the back of the switch seems to be OK and I cannot find anything wrong with the wiring in the column. Unless someone can convince me otherwise I think it is the signal switch. Before I change it I will try the suggestion that have been suggested.

I have a '98 silverado that does the same thing, probably need to replace the the turn signal lever it may be burning out. Sometimes as soon as I hit the brakes it stops and when I let off the brakes it continues. Also sometimes smoke will come from the steering column and you can hear a sparking noise like positive and negative wires are touching. The windshield wipers will also lock up frequently. Mines been doing it for almost a year now, but for sometime reason since it got colder outside, it stopped doing it. strange...

Hello Ron,
There are a few things you can try, first of all take a look under the drivers side brake lights you will see a bunch of wiring there going into a block sometimes the wires will just fall out after a few years of getting hot, cold ect. Now make sure that all the wires are plugged in and tight. Now if thats all ok the next thing you can try is to take off the negative post on your battery and leave off for about 10 minutes should be enough to reset computer. Now after you do that you may have to reset the security system, Now what you want to do is make sure battery is hooked back up, and now you want to make sure your window is down drivers side in case doors lock, Unless you have another set of keys, Now use the key with the little sensor on it put it in ignition and turn key to the on position and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes remember not running the engine just in the On position, After that time go ahead and try everything out, Everything should be set back to the factory setting on your computer and security center. Alright Ron Thats about it for now. Give me a hoot if you need to ask me anything else. OK And Thanks for Using Fix Ya Bear001

2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 cruse stoped working but light is still on.

This is very complex , first thing is have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the BCM , PCM !
The body control module (BCM) monitors the signal circuit of the cruise control switches. The BCM relays the cruise control switch status to the engine control module (ECM) via the GMLAN serial data circuit. The ECM uses the status of the cruise control switch to determine when to capture and maintain the vehicle speed. The ECM monitors the vehicle speed signal circuit in order to determine the desired vehicle speed. The ECM uses the throttle actuator control (TAC) motor in order to maintain the vehicle speed. For further information on the TAC System, refer to Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System Descriptionfor the 4.3L engine or Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System Description for the 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L or 7.0L engines.
Your best bet would be to take to the dealer !

I have a 2009 silverado 4x4 that when hooked to my horse trailer the running lights work but the brake lights do not?

The parking lights and stop-turn signals are two different circuits so you would need to check the turn signal circuit coming out of the trailer plug on the truck first.
You should have one wire in the plug for each side, and they should be hot when the turn signal switch in in that position and the light is flashing on the truck.

4-ways,signal and brake lights dont work

Canadian, The switch will run you $150 ( non cruise control ) to $250 ( with cruise control). Then what ever labor rates are in you area could run $80 to $180 to replace.
Hope this helps.
By the way, why do you believe the switch is bad?
Let me know.
