Question about 1994 Pontiac Sunbird

1 Answer

Im having an issue with the 94 Pon Sunbird LE over heating. I constantly have been replacing the thermo stat. There is no leak at all but you can smell it burning through the exhaust in the back. it has a real sweet smell to it. We just cant seem to find a leak. The resiviour is full and doesn't empty into the radiator at all. Iv checked it for clog's an there is nothing its like its not sucking up into the radiator and the radiator is needing alot of coolant. Im real worried I dont want the heads to crack but Im not sure what else to do for the car. Again there is no evident sign's of it leaking it's been checked for leak's no one is finding out why its over heating the way it is. The only thing we haven't done was changing the pump. any idea's would be wonderful to hear. Thank you.

Thank you. I figured it was a deep seeded issue like this that I wouldnt find so easy to handle.
I haven't ran the car at all since I noticed this issue happening only around the block to see if it over heated quickly as it was. and even then she has just sat.. really rough because we just remodled the entire engine I wish baddly we would have noticed the head's but they looked perfect at the time. We haven't allowed the over heating to continue except the one time to just get home in this winter storm we had the children there was just no choice in the matter. I will have the head's looked at asap. thank god taxes are here.. now I know why I smelled the sweet smell it wasn't clicking with me though.

Sorry to tell you this but the head gasket is blown and leaking into a cylinder. thats why u smell a sweet smell from the exhaust. right now the head could be warped and i would suggest taking it off and having it shaved put in new head gasket and put back together. stop running it immediately because it will eventually ruin the engine also. check oil level to see if its overfull and will look milky, good luck

I had the same issue with a 95 model we replaced the head 2 times and the engine once and it did not resolve the issue but i did find out later that there is a bleeder in the coolant system that bleeds air out so the system is completely full with no air pockets what so ever. they cause it to vapor lock and water won't flow. this is what i was told by a mechanic so maybe this will help Good luck!

Engine over heats was told it is a/c pump?

Check the thermos stat and the coolant reservoir for leaks, if it's dry your engine will over heat. Or its time for a coolant flush.

My 94 Sunbird LE Coupe was running fine no problems on a trip and home. The other day the check engine light came on for a short time then went out. Yesterday as I was driving it it was sluggish, dogg

Check for an intake manifold leak. Other possible causes are too many to list. Also check for a vacuum hose being loose or leaking Good luck.

My 94 pontiac sunbird is leaking antifreeze out from the engine head.

if this is where the coolant leak is then you will have to have the head gasket(s) replaced to fix the problem.

Car is over heating. Alero 2001

If you changed the hoses and thermostat and the car is still overheating, then the next thing to look at is the water pump. See if the water pump is leaking water from a vent hole. If it is, then the water pump is defective and will need to be replaced. Sure hope this helped.

HELP Will not go in Reverse

Need more information to be sure but usually reverse is the first thing to stop working when the fluid is low.  Check the fluid level and if it is low fill it to the proper level and then check for a leak.  If the fluid level is full more than likely it is an internal problem.
