Question about 1996 Volvo 850

1 Answer

96 Volvo Wagon. when I start the engine I have to play with the key switch in order for the headlights and turn signals to work. I then have to move it a little to get the speedo to work. Odometer works reagardless of where the key switch position is in. Do I need to replace the key switch?

I found key switches with keys on line for $55 including shipping. Im going to order one and replace it myself. Yes, I already considered the fact I will have seperate keys for the ignition and doors, no problem. Thanks, ill let you know if this fixes the problem. Dave

That definitely sounds like you need a new ignition. However,I believe there may be some sort of sensor to detect the ignition switch is on,but it would most likely result in basically all or nothing. All the lights would work or nothing would work.Keys and ignitions are definitely a wear out type of problem when your car gets to be that old.Another thing to consider is that if you do change the ignition, you still need the old key for the doorlocks and trunklock.I had a similar problem with my 1995 a few years ago.If you want to save a little money and are in the USA,I highly recommend a AAA approved shop. They are just as knowledgable and much less than a dealer and are more than capable of doing it correctly and honestly.I use one and they have consistently had the best price for repairs within a 20 mile radius so I do not even price shop anymore. If you have any questions or need more help, just comment here and I will get an autolink to your post and reply ASAP.I really encourage responses so I can follow up properly as I know where you stand and asking someone else restarts all the explaining because we cannot see other 'Expert's' responses.Good luck,Greg

Turn on ignition jeep starts ok sometimes spedo and idicators wont work unless you move key adain while running

There could be some play in the ign switch allowing the voltage to be lost in certain position. Turn key to run position, do start engine. Turn on blower fan, turn signal, radio . Wiggle the key to see if they go off with key movement. If so replace electrical switch behind the key and tumbler

I show the dimmer switch for the headlights being part of the turn signal switch in the column.

My volvo 960 1997 wagon at times won't start. when I try to start it, it's like the battery is completely dead, but the battery is fine. what is making it do this ?

Depends on your definition of completely dead.
Do the lights work, but no crank ?
Can you jump start the car ?
A mechanic would check for voltage at the battery, the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch, along with the ground connections to the engine.

96 Volvo 850 Turbo. Both headlights went out but the high beams work if I hold the switch back. Turn lights and running lights still work. Dash lights glitch slightly as well

there is a head lamp switch mounted to the steering column. it has died. to access it you have to remove the cover under the dash. remove the four bolts hold the steering column and let it drop down. find the switch usually behind and to the side of the ignition switch. there will be a rod giong to it from the handle. remove and replace the switch and assemble in reverse order

Your problem is at your key. The switch in the steering colmb is cracked or worn out. When it happens, try rotating the key counter clockwise just a little bit and watch everything start to work.
Good Luck,

Headlights go out while driving

You need to check the headlight relay to see if it is still good. Parts store can tell you where it should be and what the part number is when you find it. A good shop will be able to test it. I have found that Volvo likes to play hide the relay under the dash so it's hard to say for sure where it will be.
