If the noise is emanating from under the valve cover, it isn't the timing chain.
It can be a stuck lifter and you might want to try a lifter cleaner from an auto parts store.
I think you will need to change the oil after adding the cleaner and running the engine for a while.
If the engine uses mechanical lifters, the noise could be coming from a bent rocker arm or a worn push rod.
You may be able to narrow down the source of the noise by using a longer screwdriver, placing the tip at various places and resting the handle on the bone behind your ear. Obviously, stay well clear of anything rotating.
